What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru Outback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim uses two 7-inch touchscreens in the centre stack, while Premium and above get the 11.6-inch portrait display. That larger screen is the better setup, and Limited and Premier trims add a more upscale cabin with two-tone leather upholstery and contrast stitching.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre boxer flat-four is slow, while the turbocharged 2.4-litre XT engine is much stronger and smoother. If you want easier highway passing and better overall refinement, the XT is the one to seek out.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Touring trim, and reverse automatic braking is also included there. A driver-attention monitor is reserved for Premier and Premier XT.
• Infotainment: The standard system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The single large screen is the more cohesive setup, while the base dual-screen arrangement is the one to avoid if you value ease of use.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 9.0 L/100 km city and 7.1 highway, while the turbo XT is rated at 10.1 city and 7.9 highway.

Which 2021 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2021 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Outdoor, Limited, Touring, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, but it gets the less appealing dual-screen setup instead of the larger portrait display. It makes sense only if you want the lowest price and can live with the simplest cabin.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch portrait display and a more polished interior without pushing you too far up the price ladder.
• Outdoor: This trim adds the turbocharged XT engine and extra drive modes for snow and mud, making it the pick if you want stronger performance and more capability.
• Limited: This trim brings a more upscale feel with two-tone leather upholstery and contrast stitching, and it is also available with the XT engine.
• Touring: This trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking, so it is a smart choice if you want more standard safety equipment.
• Premier: This is the most fully equipped choice, with the driver-attention monitor and the most premium cabin presentation. The Premier XT is the top-end version if you want the strongest engine and the most features.

Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims, but the extra safety features start to appear as you move up the range.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru Outback?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing movement to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 322 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,720 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $26,346 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,758 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can make it harder for sellers to command top dollar right away. If you plan to sell later, the current softness may mean you need to price competitively to stand out.

Even so, the Outback’s practical reputation and broad appeal should help it remain attractive to used shoppers. Strong demand for versatile, safety-focused vehicles can support values over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2021 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong safety, standard AWD, and broad everyday usefulness.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $23,373 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,346 CAD average.
• It brought a major sixth-generation update with fresh safety tech and a new tablet-style interface.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $28,629 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $26,346 CAD average.
• It shifts toward a more adventure-focused Wilderness setup with tougher off-road intent.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-round pick if you want the Outback’s core strengths at a softer price than newer examples. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money while keeping the same practical formula.
