CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 62 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,376 CAD, 35.5% of 2018 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Subaru Outback 4.67 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, roomy wagon-turned-crossover with a strong reputation for all-weather capability. By this generation, Subaru had already made AWD standard, and the Outback’s appeal rested on that traction, its generous ground clearance, and a more refined ride than earlier versions. It was also positioned as one of Subaru’s technology leaders, with EyeSight driver-assist features and a broad range of safety equipment helping to reinforce its family-friendly image.
What makes the 2018 model especially distinctive is how much equipment it could offer without losing the Outback’s straightforward, durable character. The generation’s cabin technology included an available 11.6-inch portrait-style touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while base models used a pair of stacked 8-inch screens. Buyers also had access to the turbocharged 2.4-litre engine in higher trims, and the Wilderness variant introduced later in this generation showed how far the Outback could be pushed toward off-road use. At the same time, the model’s drawbacks remained familiar: Subaru’s CVT can be divisive, fuel consumption is not class-leading, and long-term maintenance can be costlier than some rivals.

I bought the Premium model as a replacement for my 2012 Outback. My 2018 has navigation and moon roof. Car is awesome. Drives and shifts more smoothly than the older one. Not that much acceleration getting on the freeway but adequate. I like all the safety features (blind spot detection, back up camera, lane detection, etc.). Ill be keeping this car until self-driving cars are the standard.

Just bought a 2018 Outback Touring. It is quiet, smooth ride, the V6 has the power that V4 versions lack, which means I would never buy the smaller engine. Love the larger screen on the navigation system. The safety features actually saved us money on our auto insurance and we are paying less for the 2018 Outback than the 2012 Accord V6 we own. The visibility is another great aspect of the Outback. Getting into and out of the Outback is much easier with its higher clearance. While I have only had it a short time, I have really enjoyed driving it and look forward to learning about all the new features available.

| Year-Round High | $19,553 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,546 CAD |

There are 192 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Subaru Outback earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner approval. Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, strong safety features, and ample cargo space, and those strengths fit well if you want a practical, roomy wagon-turned-crossover with all-weather capability. The model’s family-friendly appeal is reinforced by its standard AWD and broad safety equipment, while its everyday usefulness makes it a sensible choice for shoppers who value comfort and versatility. With 30.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a well-priced example.
Is the 2018 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many drivers trust and enjoy living with over time, especially because of its smooth ride, strong safety features, and practical cargo space. That said, some owners mention infotainment and navigation frustrations, so you should pay close attention to how the electronics work during a test drive and inspection. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to avoid costly surprises.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to make a good purchase possible.
- Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 192 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.30% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $16,607 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $16,750 CAD sits slightly below last year's $19,546 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy at today’s average, there may be less room for appreciation later unless demand strengthens. Even so, the Outback’s practical appeal and strong owner satisfaction can help support steady interest when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2018 is a strong choice if you want a practical, roomy, all-weather vehicle and you can find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby years to see whether a similar Outback offers a better entry price or a more attractive listing.
