CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 101 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,224 CAD, 32.7% of 2021 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Subaru Outback 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Subaru Outback stands out as a raised, all-wheel drive station wagon that leans into practicality rather than fashion. It is described as tough, economical, and slow, which captures its appeal well: this is a vehicle that prioritises everyday usefulness over flash. Subaru’s approach gives it a distinctly old-school character, but the Outback still offers the essentials many buyers want, including generous space, go-anywhere capability, reliability, low running costs, strong resale value, and safety.
That combination makes the 2021 Subaru Outback appealing to drivers who want a sensible, versatile vehicle that can handle daily life with ease. It is not especially innovative or stylish, and its lack of speed is part of the package, but that restraint is also what defines it. Owners’ praise for its comfortable ride, modern technology, and safety features reinforces its reputation as a practical choice, though some have noted that cabin storage could be better and that climate controls on the touchscreen can be distracting to use while driving.

Upgraded to 2021 Limited from a 2016 Outback. Like the improvements for the seat positioning options, mirror adjustment integration to driver choice, and of course the touch panel in the middle. Will be integrating Android Auto as well once I stop driving. It has a better ride then 2016 - kudos to Subaru for making those minor adjustments. Looking forward to better gas mileage, engine now shuts down when at a stop. Heated steering wheel a nice touch. Map and driving direction work very nicely with improved notifications. Traffic jams are now very apparent. Look forward to longer road trips given the comfort that is now there.

We were searching for a safe and reliable car for our teenage son to commute back and forth to school. The Outback checks so many of the boxes for what we were looking for... with one very big exception. The climate controls on the 2020+ models being very low on the touch screen(s) and not directly responsive caused my son to take his eyes off of the road for much too long of a time just to adjust the fan speed. Were now considering models up to and including the 2019 builds as the climate controls are more easily accessible.

Im not sure if its due to riding higher or what it could be but for some reason this outback xt feels quicker than my previous 2015 wrx. I drove a impreza in-between the two so its hard to say. But the crazy lag I remember with my wrx is not present in my xt. Its awesome and more than I expected.

How much does the 2021 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,505 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $25,698 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $29,366 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,742 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.78% |
Prices have softened 7.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 312 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Subaru Outback earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, impressive safety features, and modern technology. The Outback’s practical, go-anywhere character also fits buyers who want generous space and everyday usefulness rather than flash. Good deal availability at 34.3% of listings adds to its appeal if you are shopping selectively.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the Outback’s reliability and low running costs. The expert assessment also frames it as a vehicle built around long-term usefulness, low cost, and the kind of durability you can count on. Subaru’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the cabin tech and controls still suit you, since those are the areas owners most often question.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru Outback?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim uses two 7-inch touchscreens in the centre stack, while Premium and above get the 11.6-inch portrait display. Limited and Premier trims add two-tone brown or beige leather upholstery with contrast stitching, and the Outdoor XT uses water-resistant synthetic upholstery with lime green contrast stitching.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre boxer flat-four is slow and noisy, while the XT turbo 2.4-litre flat-four is much quicker, smoother, and more refined.
- Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims and includes adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Touring trim, as is reverse automatic braking. A driver-attention monitor is included only with the Premier and Premier XT.
- Infotainment: The system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The 11.6-inch portrait display is standard on Premium and above, while the base dual-screen setup is the one to avoid.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbo XT returns 10.1 L/100 km in the city and 7.9 L/100 km on the highway, compared with 9.0 L/100 km city and 7.1 L/100 km highway for the base engine.
Which 2021 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2021 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Outdoor, Limited, Touring, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the least expensive way into the Outback, but it is also the one with the least appealing infotainment setup, so it makes the most sense only if price is your top priority.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 11.6-inch portrait display and a more polished cabin presentation without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
- Outdoor: This trim is the best fit if you want the XT turbo engine and extra capability-focused character, plus additional driving modes for snow and mud.
- Limited: This trim adds a more upscale feel with leather upholstery and is a strong choice if you want comfort and refinement.
- Touring: This trim is the better pick if you want more safety equipment, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking.
- Premier: This is the most feature-rich choice, adding the driver-attention monitor and the most premium cabin presentation.
Safety-package note: blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking are standard from the Touring trim, while the driver-attention monitor is reserved for Premier and Premier XT.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 312 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $25,698 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $26,505 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,742 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more attractive point, but it also means future sellers may face a market that is still adjusting downward. If prices remain near the current average, resale values should stay supported by the Outback’s practical reputation and broad appeal. Strong owner satisfaction should also help keep demand healthy when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2021 Outback was a 2020 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) "Top Safety Pick+", and it earned five-star overall ratings from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal crash and for rollover.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims and includes adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. A driver’s knee airbag and passenger seat-cushion airbag are also standard. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Touring trim, as is reverse automatic braking. A driver-attention monitor is included only with the Premier and Premier XT.
Should I buy a 2021 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong safety, standard EyeSight, and broad everyday practicality.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $23,409 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,505 CAD average.
- It brought a major sixth-generation update with fresh safety tech and new engines.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $29,052 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $26,505 CAD average.
- It shifts toward a more rugged, adventure-focused Wilderness character.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-round pick if you want the Outback’s core strengths at a softer price than newer alternatives. If you are price-sensitive, the 2020 is the value play; if you want a more rugged direction, the 2022 is the one to compare.
