2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2023 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

The first Lexus RX went on sale about 25 years ago, and it has cultivated a loyal following with people who aspire to own a reliable, refined, safe, and stylish luxury crossover SUV. To say the redesigned 2023 Lexus RX represents the mother of all risk/reward scenarios is an understatement. But based on a day driving numerous versions of the new 2023 RX, we’d say Lexus has struck the right balance with its latest two-row midsize SUV.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2023 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that might have gone unnoticed by many. The changes were minor, with the most noticeable being the clever Mercedes star logos on the front grille and slight modifications to the headlights and taillights. The standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights added a touch of modernity. The GLE 450e test vehicle, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, presented a handsome appearance. Inside, the GLE 450e exuded luxury with its Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior colour choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality cabin experience.

The 2023 Lexus RX, built in Canada, entered its fifth generation with a design that was shorter in height, broader in width, and longer in wheelbase compared to its predecessor. Despite maintaining the same overall length, the RX appeared smaller due to its reduced rear overhang and softer design lines. The signature spindle-style grille was better integrated, and the RX featured a light-blade taillight design and sporty bumper. The interior was modern, with fewer buttons and knobs, and offered digital instrumentation and a touchscreen display. The RX 350 was available in various trims, with Canadian pricing starting at $58,650. The RX's design was familiar yet fresh, distinguishing it from the previous generation and the smaller Lexus NX.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines, with the GLE 450e PHEV being a standout. The GLE 450e combined a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The GLE 450e's fuel economy was estimated at 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres in hybrid mode, with a range of 77 kilometres on electric power alone. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads. The GLE's sophisticated steering made it feel maneuverable despite its size.

The 2023 Lexus RX 350 featured a turbocharged 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. It offered better torque and fuel economy than the previous V6 engine. The RX 350 AWD accelerated to 100 km/h in about 7.3 seconds, though it felt quicker. The RX 350 Executive trim displayed occasional torque steer and body motion over uneven pavement, while the F Sport 3 trim felt more secure with its adaptive suspension. The RX 350 AWD's fuel economy was estimated at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres, with real-world results slightly higher. The RX's turbo engine provided a satisfying driving experience despite its less refined sound.

Form and function

2023 Lexus RX

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for adults in both the first and second rows, with generous headroom and legroom. The cabin felt light and airy, and outward visibility was excellent. The GLE 450e offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, which was competitive with some rivals. The optional third-row seat was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 trims and was suitable only for young children. The GLE 450e came with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Additional features included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, ventilated front seats, and a head-up display.

The 2023 Lexus RX 350 provided comfortable seating, with the F Sport 3 package offering sport seat bolsters for added support. The RX 350 Executive featured semi-aniline premium leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The RX 350 F Sport 3 had black NuLuxe simulated leather seats and a sportier interior. The back seat was roomy and supportive, though taller passengers might find headroom tight. The RX offered improved cargo space, with 838 litres behind the second row and 1,308 litres with the rear seat folded. Storage areas were practical, and the RX's interior was modern and sophisticated.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens. The system was user-friendly, though it required some learning to navigate its features. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be inadvertently activated, causing issues like sudden volume changes.

The 2023 Lexus RX introduced the Lexus Interface multimedia infotainment system with a 9.8-inch or 14-inch touchscreen display. It included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and various connected services. The Intelligent Assistant voice recognition was generally accurate, though it occasionally provided incorrect results. User profiles allowed for personalized settings, and streaming services like Apple Music were available. The system's main drawback was the inability to view multiple data panels simultaneously. The RX also offered a Mark Levinson premium sound system, digital instrumentation, and a head-up display, though the latter could be difficult to see with polarized sunglasses.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE came with a comprehensive suite of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included adaptive cruise control and active lane-keep assist. The GLE's safety systems were unobtrusive and effective. The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS for the 2022 model year, though crash tests for the 2024 model were not yet completed.

The 2023 Lexus RX featured Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which included lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and blind spot monitoring. New features included motorcycle detection and evasive steering assistance. The RX also offered semi-autonomous driving technologies like Proactive Driving Assist and Traffic Jam Assist. However, some features, like curve-speed reduction, were not as effective as expected. The RX's safety systems were generally impressive, though the HUD could be difficult to see with polarized sunglasses.
