2023 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. The current-generation model has been on sale since 2017, and while it still seems fresh as a daisy, seven years is a long time in the automotive world. In addition, aside from a new Rhodium White premium paint option, Mazda makes no other changes to the 2023 CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-5 now lives side-by-side with the Mazda CX-50, and when you consider the existence of the CX-30, the CX-90, and the upcoming CX-70, well, it certainly doesn’t seem as though the CX-5 will remain in Mazda’s new car lineup for much longer.

2024 Lexus TX Reviews Summary

Lexus has sold three-row SUVs in the past. But they were either originally engineered for serious off-roading (GX), too expensive (LX), or too cramped for third-row passengers (RX L). The 2024 Lexus TX is none of these things, making it perfect for the typical three-row luxury SUV buyer who spends almost all their time on paved roads. Overall, based on our week testing a TX 350, this new Lexus SUV gets most things right.

Look and feel

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-5, despite its age, continued to be a strong contender in the compact crossover SUV market. It was praised for its stylish design and high-quality materials, giving it the appearance and feel of a small luxury SUV. The available turbocharged engine provided impressive power, and the model boasted a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS. However, its small back seat, limited cargo space, and frustrating infotainment system were potential drawbacks. Mazda's decision to transition from the CX-5 to the CX-50 was part of a broader marketing strategy, similar to Infiniti's rebranding efforts. The CX-5 was available in six versions, with prices ranging from $31,250 to $46,755, depending on the trim and options.

In contrast, the 2024 Lexus TX was based on the Toyota Grand Highlander but distinguished itself as a luxury SUV. It featured upscale styling with 22-inch wheels that enhanced its appearance. The TX's design was more conservative compared to other Lexus models, appealing to those who preferred a toned-down look. The TX was available in three model series: TX 350, TX 500h F Sport Performance, and TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid, with prices ranging from $72,036 to $87,486. The TX 350, likely the volume-selling version, came with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and standard AWD. The interior offered premium features, though some found the cabin too dark despite the panoramic sunroof. The TX provided a luxurious experience, befitting the Lexus badge.

Performance

2023 Mazda CX-5

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine options. The base model featured a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. It had a fuel economy rating of 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. The more powerful 2.5 Turbo variant delivered 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on premium fuel, or 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet on regular fuel. This engine also used the six-speed automatic and AWD, with a fuel economy of 9.8 L/100 km. The turbocharged engine provided a thrilling driving experience, with responsive handling and a firm ride quality. However, it consumed more fuel during spirited driving, averaging 11.0 L/100 km in testing.

The 2024 Lexus TX 350 was equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. It accelerated to 100 km/h in about eight seconds, offering adequate performance for typical driving situations. The TX 350 had a fuel economy rating of 10.3 L/100 km in combined driving, slightly better than the previous RX L model. During testing, it averaged 13.8 L/100 km. The TX 350's suspension provided a comfortable ride, with commendable body motion control and accurate steering. However, the brake pedal felt too soft, though it was easy to modulate for smooth stops.

Form and function

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 received updates for improved comfort, including modified front seats. It offered features like power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Signature trim included Nappa leather upholstery, enhancing the luxury feel. However, the CX-5's interior space was limited, with cramped rear-seat head and legroom and a smaller cargo area. It provided 871 litres of cargo space behind the rear seat and 1,680 litres with the seats folded down, less than some rivals.

The 2024 Lexus TX addressed previous shortcomings in Lexus's three-row SUVs. It offered a comfortable interior with premium materials, heated and ventilated seats, and a heated steering wheel. The second-row seats were less welcoming due to a flat lower cushion, but the third-row seat was habitable for adults. The TX provided 572 litres of cargo space behind the third row, 1,625 litres with the third row folded, and 2,746 litres with the second row down. It featured numerous storage compartments, though some lacked lining, potentially causing noise.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5's Mazda Connect infotainment system featured a 10.25-inch display with sophisticated graphics but was frustrating to use. It lacked a helpful voice recognition system, and the physical controls were awkward. The system required memorization and focus, making it distracting. Mazda Connect offered features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Bose premium audio system. The test vehicle included a front-facing camera and a surround-view camera system for easier parking.

The 2024 Lexus TX came with a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a digital rearview mirror. The Executive packages added a head-up display, surround-view camera, and semi-autonomous parking assist. The Lexus Interface infotainment system featured a 14-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Drive Connect subscription provided cloud-based navigation and a digital assistant with natural voice recognition. The TX offered free 10-year subscriptions to Service Connect and Safety Connect, and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system was available.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 excelled in safety, with standard i-Activsense driver assistance technology. It included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The 2.5 Turbo Signature added features like a surround-view camera and Traffic Jam Assist. The CX-5 received five-star ratings from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick ranking from the IIHS. However, it lacked a warning for driving without headlights at night, a potential safety concern.

The 2024 Lexus TX featured the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. Proactive Drive Assist provided additional braking and steering assistance. The TX also had blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a safe exit assist system. The Executive packages added parking sensors, front cross-traffic alert, and traffic jam assist. LSS+ 3.0 was smooth and effective, though the TX slowed too dramatically when other vehicles cut in.
