2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric car is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfil goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its North American dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for our market came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed simply ID.4, slotting below the ID.4 Pro and ID.4 Pro AWD. We recently spent a day on a test drive with the U.S. equivalent of the ID.4 Pro AWD model, along with a shorter drive in a base ID.4 model.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

Though Mazda hasn’t redesigned its popular compact crossover SUV since 2017, a program of continuous refinement makes the 2024 CX-5 better than ever. It might even be too good. It has shared showroom space with the similarly sized Mazda CX-50 model since last year but continues to outsell its newer and slightly more expensive sibling. As it turns out, there are numerous reasons for that.

Verdict: Mazda positions the CX-5 as an SUV for active urbanites, and it serves perfectly in its role. Stylish design, taut dimensions, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings make it a great choice. Plus, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is genuinely enjoyable to drive.

Look and feel

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 featured subtle styling updates, including a gloss black trim on the front bumper and a more squared-off rear bumper design aimed at improving aerodynamics. New wheel designs and colours were introduced, and the rear VW logo was illuminated. Despite these changes, the ID.4 maintained a distinct EV appearance, lacking the traditional SUV profile and ground clearance that many buyers find appealing. Built on VW’s MEB platform, the ID.4 shared its modularity with other EVs, promising versatility across various models. Inside, the ID.4 boasted a minimalist design with quality materials, including leatherette upholstery made partly from recycled fibres, offering a premium feel even in the base model.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 retained its design from the second-generation model introduced in 2017, with minor updates. The new Suna trim featured exclusive Zircon Sand paint and Terracotta leather seats. Mazda improved fuel economy for the base engine models and added wireless charging and connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The CX-5 offered a choice between a 187-horsepower base engine and a 256-horsepower turbocharged engine, both paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. The interior was upgraded with premium materials, providing an upscale feel at a mainstream price, and the CX-5 continued to deliver a sophisticated driving experience with improved suspension and handling.

Performance

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 offered two battery options: a new 62-kWh pack for the base model with RWD and an 82-kWh pack for the Pro model, available with RWD or AWD. The single-motor RWD models delivered 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, while the dual-motor AWD version increased output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery reduced curb weight by 109 kg, enhancing acceleration and handling. Despite its power, the ID.4's handling was less engaging, with noticeable body roll on twisty roads. Regenerative braking was present but did not support one-pedal driving, offering a more traditional driving experience.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 Turbo, when fueled with premium gas, produced 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, while regular gas yielded 227 hp and 310 lb-ft. The powertrain was more rewarding with gradual acceleration, allowing torque to build. However, fuel efficiency was a downside, with a combined rating of 9.8 L/100 km, and observed consumption of 10.3 L/100 km. The CX-5's driving dynamics were enhanced by a re-tuned suspension, a stiffer frame, and G-Vectoring Control Plus technology, providing a smooth and responsive ride. The CX-5 excelled in various driving conditions, offering a quiet highway experience and lively handling in the city and on mountain roads.

Form and function

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

7/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 provided ample interior space, surpassing other affordable EVs in front and rear legroom and headroom. It offered 858 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,818 litres with them folded, making it practical for an EV. The ID.4's towing capacity was 1,000 kg for RWD models and 1,225 kg for AWD models. Interior updates included a conventional lid for the centre console and improved phone storage, along with three-zone climate control and heated rear seats.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 featured standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, with comfortable and supportive seating. Leather upholstery was standard on most trims, with premium Nappa leather on the Signature trim. The interior was snug but comfortable for four adults, with supportive rear seats and thoughtful amenities like rear air vents and a centre armrest. Cargo space was 871 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,680 litres with them folded, which was less than some competitors but sufficient for family trips.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 came standard with a 12.0-inch touchscreen, offering improved software responsiveness and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment system featured sharp graphics and natural-language voice recognition, though the haptic touchpads on the dashboard and steering wheel were less intuitive. The ID.Light system provided ambient lighting and navigation cues, adding a unique touch to the driving experience.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 eschewed touchscreens for traditional controls, though it allowed touchscreen operation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 10.25-inch display was navigated via a console-mounted knob, with quick-access buttons for essential functions. While the native voice interface was less intuitive, Mazda Connected Services offered remote features and emergency assistance. Higher trims included a 10-speaker Bose sound system, enhancing the premium feel of the interior.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with top scores in frontal and side crash tests. The 2022 model's IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" rating suggested strong safety credentials, though the 2023 ratings were pending. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and VW’s Travel Assist 2.0, with new additions like Park Assist Plus and a 360-degree camera system.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of ADAS, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims offered additional features like adaptive headlights and a driver monitoring system. While the CX-5 had not earned a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick designation, it received five-star ratings from the NHTSA, except for a four-star rollover rating.
