2023 Kia Carnival Reviews Summary

Over the holidays of 2022, we used the 2023 Kia Carnival to drive to many gatherings of family and friends. Whenever we slid open a side door to load or unload passengers, a common question was: “So, is this a minivan or an SUV?” If you work in Kia’s marketing department, the Carnival is neither. The company calls it a multi-purpose vehicle, or MPV. But if you’re a typical consumer, this stylish Kia is a minivan because it has sliding doors and does not offer all-wheel drive or a lifted suspension.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II and the Willys-Overland company. Fast-forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels, like the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Willys Sport, and Wrangler Sahara, don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

2023 Kia Carnival

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Kia Carnival presented a unique blend of style and functionality, setting itself apart from the typical minivan. Imagining an off-road version with all-wheel drive and enhanced ground clearance was intriguing, but the Carnival relied on its distinctive design, upscale interior, and advanced technology to stand out. Available in various trims, the Carnival's pricing ranged from $35,795 to $49,595, excluding additional fees. The SX trim, with its Storm Blue paint, showcased a sophisticated appearance with high-tech lighting, an intricate grille, and stylish roof pillar trim. However, the black alloy wheels were less inspiring. Inside, the dual screens and sunroofs added a touch of luxury, while the quality materials and robust transmission shifter contributed to a sense of refinement.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler exuded a rugged, no-nonsense design with its boxy shape and iconic features like the seven-slot grille and round headlights. Available in two-door and four-door models, the Wrangler offered the flexibility to remove doors and fold down the windshield for an open-air experience. The tailgate and rear glass provided easy access to the cargo area, while the limited-edition "Reign" purple paint added a splash of excitement. Inside, the Wrangler focused on practicality with easy-to-clean materials and a straightforward design. The body-coloured dash and chunky controls emphasized its utilitarian nature, though storage space was limited.

Performance

2023 Kia Carnival

7/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Kia Carnival was equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 290 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. This front-wheel-drive minivan offered a towing capacity of up to 1,587 kilograms and featured driving modes like Eco, Normal, Smart, and Sport. Despite its lack of all-wheel drive or a hybrid option, the Carnival's V6 engine provided ample power, even with a full load of passengers. The transmission performed smoothly, and Sport mode proved effective on steep inclines. However, the brakes showed signs of fading during a mountain descent, though they generally performed well. The Carnival's ride quality was firm yet comfortable, with a softer feel when fully loaded. While wind noise was noticeable at higher speeds, the overall driving experience was satisfying.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler offered a range of engine options, catering to various off-road needs. The standard Pentastar V6 produced 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, while a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder provided 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. For torque enthusiasts, the 3.0-litre Ecodiesel V6 delivered 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Rubicon 392, with its 6.4-litre V8 engine, boasted 470 horsepower and torque, enabling rapid acceleration and impressive off-road capabilities. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid offered a blend of electric and gasoline power. The 392 model excelled in off-road performance but had shortcomings in braking and steering. Other Wrangler trims had more suitable brakes and steering, while the Bronco emerged as a strong competitor with its independent front suspension.

Form and function

2023 Kia Carnival

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2023 Kia Carnival defied minivan conventions with its SUV-like driving position and centre console layout. Offering various upholstery options, the Carnival's interior featured a three-zone climate control system, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The SX trim's VIP Lounge Seats provided luxury but limited cargo space to 2,460 litres. Without these seats, the Carnival offered a maximum cargo capacity of 4,110 litres. The third-row seat accommodated adults comfortably, and the smart power liftgate revealed a deep cargo well with 1,139 litres of space. While the Carnival's interior was practical, some controls were distracting to use while driving.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, with heated options available in select trims. The rear seat was tight, especially in the four-door models, and storage for small items was limited. The Wrangler's cargo space measured 2,050 litres with the rear seats folded, slightly less than the Bronco. The hard top could be removed in sections, and the soft top offered various configurations for open-air driving. The Sky One-Touch power soft top provided a convenient option for natural air conditioning. The Wrangler featured ample charging points, including USB ports and a 115-volt outlet.

Technology

2023 Kia Carnival

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2023 Kia Carnival SX featured dual 12.3-inch digital screens for instrumentation and infotainment, enhancing the interior's upscale feel. The digital instrumentation impressed with its dynamic graphics and changing themes. The infotainment system included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a three-year Kia Connect subscription. However, the Bose audio system was underwhelming, and the voice recognition system had limitations. Additional tech features included Quiet Mode, Passenger Talk, and a passenger view camera.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came standard with a 7-inch touchscreen running the Uconnect system, while our tester had the larger 8.4-inch version. The system initially appeared complex but was intuitive once familiar. Off-road pages provided valuable information, and connectivity options included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Wrangler's tech was practical, with a forward-facing camera and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories, but lacked advanced features like a digital key.

Safety

2023 Kia Carnival

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

The 2023 Kia Carnival offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, with standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring was available from the EX trim, and the rear-seat reminder system used ultrasonic sensors to detect movement. Adaptive cruise control and Safe Exit Assist were standard from the EX grade, while the EX+ and SX trims added a surround-view camera and Blind-Spot View Monitor. The Highway Driving Assist technology was particularly impressive, providing smooth and reliable assistance. The IIHS rated the Carnival as a Top Safety Pick, though standard headlights received a Poor rating.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's safety features were limited, with a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control as standard. Advanced features like blind-spot monitoring and forward collision warning were only available on top trims or as part of an option package. The Wrangler lacked lane-keeping assist. The IIHS ratings were mixed, with some trims receiving Poor headlight ratings. The NHTSA awarded the Wrangler four stars for frontal crash tests and three stars for rollover ratings.
