2023 Honda HR-V Reviews Summary

Honda’s subcompact SUV gets a makeover inside and out. Previously based on the Fit, the new HR-V shares the global architecture that also underpins the Civic.

Honda continues to narrow trim options: There were once as many as five, but the Touring trim level got the axe after the 2022 model year. The three trims for 2023 are LX, Sport, and EX-L. We drove the top trim, EX-L, through a mountainous test course.

New styling plus the newly standard Honda Sensing suite of safety features put this latest HR-V back at the front of the pack it led when it debuted in 2016.

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

Look and feel

2023 Honda HR-V

9/10

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 Honda HR-V underwent a significant styling transformation, shedding some of its quirky charm for a more sophisticated and modern appearance. The lowered beltline and simplified detailing contributed to a sleeker look, with cleaner lines and fewer interruptions. The windshield wipers were discreetly tucked under the hood, and the black molding strips on the roof were removed. The test model was showcased in a Nordic Forest Pearl colour, adding to its refined aesthetic. Inside, the HR-V featured black cloth seats with heated front seats and mirrors as standard. The EX-L trim offered perforated leather seats, enhancing comfort, although the eight-way power driver’s seat was unavailable in Canada due to supply shortages.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80 exuded luxury with its choice of turbocharged engines and high-end features. The Prestige trim offered six exterior colours and stylish 22-inch wheels. Inside, diamond-stitched Nappa leather, a suede headliner, and metallic accents emphasized its premium status. The ambient lighting, 3D digital instrument cluster, and wide touchscreen display further underscored its flagship status. Despite its luxurious appeal, the Prestige Signature trim available in the U.S. was not deemed exceptional enough to warrant its absence from the Canadian market.

Performance

2023 Honda HR-V

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Honda HR-V was powered by a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine, producing 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, an improvement over the previous model. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) featured a Step-Shift function to mimic traditional automatic transmission sounds. Drivers could select from Normal, Snow, or ECON drive modes, with Sport mode available for a more dynamic experience. Despite updates for a quieter cabin, the HR-V remained noisier at higher speeds. The new suspension and widened tracks improved handling, but the HR-V was not overpowered compared to competitors offering multiple powertrain options.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered two engine choices: a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 with 375 horsepower. Both engines paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV80 provided five driving modes and a towing capacity of up to 2,720 kilograms. The 3.5T model featured upgraded brakes and adaptive damping suspension, delivering a rewarding driving experience. Despite its power, the GV80 was thirsty, with observed fuel consumption higher than official estimates. The steering was unremarkable, but the overall driving dynamics were sporty and engaging.

Form and function

2023 Honda HR-V

8/10

2024 Genesis GV80

5/10

The 2023 Honda HR-V, a subcompact SUV, offered a well-thought-out interior with a centre console featuring a shelf for storage. The fastback design slightly reduced rear-seat headroom, but cargo space remained competitive, with 691 litres behind the rear seats and 1,559 litres with them folded. The second-generation HR-V improved seating ergonomics and passenger volume, although rear legroom decreased slightly. Front passengers benefited from increased legroom, enhancing comfort.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 3.5T Prestige included a third-row seat and luxurious features like heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate. However, the seats were less comfortable for long trips, and rear legroom was limited. Cargo space was generous, with 988 litres behind the second row and 2,378 litres with seats folded. Despite its luxury, the GV80's seating comfort was a notable drawback.

Technology

The 2023 Honda HR-V featured a tablet-style touchscreen with physical controls for power and volume. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, with wireless versions on the EX-L trim. The EX-L also offered a 9-inch infotainment display, wireless charging, and an eight-speaker audio system. The user-friendly interface and machine learning shortcuts enhanced the infotainment experience.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, controlled via a centre console dial. The standard package included navigation, SiriusXM, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Prestige trim featured a Lexicon premium sound system and a head-up display. The digital key system and intuitive voice recognition added to the GV80's technological appeal.

Safety

The 2023 Honda HR-V came standard with the Honda Sensing suite, including adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigation braking, and lane-keeping assist. New features for 2023 included traffic-sign recognition and a blind-spot information system. The HR-V received a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS, though NHTSA ratings were pending.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered advanced safety features like a Blind-Spot View Monitor and Remote Smart Parking Assist. Highway Driving Assist combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assist, though it was less effective in heavy traffic. The GV80 received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with four stars in frontal-impact tests.
