2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Reviews Summary

Volkswagen’s most popular model is the Tiguan compact SUV, representing quite a turn of events compared to 2017, when the original version languished at or near the bottom of consumer consideration lists. What happened? Compact crossover SUV sales exploded, and the second-generation Tiguan grew in size to become one of the biggest of the traditional small SUVs. Unsurprisingly, with the updated 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, the automaker elects to hone instead of change this recipe for success.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact SUV like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must. Competitors include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Acura RDX, Porsche Macan, and others.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is for the Korean automaker as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

Look and feel

2022 Volkswagen Tiguan

8/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan presented a conservative yet timeless design, characterized by its creased and symmetrical lines. This approach, while not overly emotive, appealed to those who appreciated simplicity and minimalism. The refreshed front styling aligned the Tiguan with Volkswagen’s larger models, featuring a restyled grille with the new VW logo and standard LED headlights. The interior of the Tiguan Highline R-Line was upscale, with perforated leather upholstery and ambient lighting, though the hard plastic in the lower cabin hinted at its mass-market status. The R-Line models added a sportier look, with the Comfortline R-Line Black Edition offering a trendy blacked-out appearance.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV70 drew styling cues from the G70 sedan, with split-bar headlights and a chrome line that suggested a coupe-like SUV without sacrificing versatility. The GV70’s cabin was a testament to luxury, with top-notch materials and a design that was both contemporary and classic. The dashboard featured a full touchscreen backed by a rotary dial and button controls, offering a user-friendly experience. The GV70’s interior was a blend of comfort and sophistication, with features like Nappa leather seating and a microfibre suede headliner available in higher trims.

Performance

2022 Volkswagen Tiguan

6/10

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan retained its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. This power was managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission and VW’s 4Motion AWD system. The Tiguan offered various driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport, and Individual, along with Offroad settings. Despite its nimble handling, the Tiguan’s performance was somewhat hindered by turbo lag and a modest power output, resulting in a fuel efficiency of 9.5 L/100 km during testing.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered more robust performance options. The 2.5T model featured a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5T boasted a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The Electrified GV70, with its dual electric motors, delivered 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. The GV70’s driving experience was a blend of comfort and sharp handling, with the electric version offering a range of 383 kilometres and fast-charging capabilities.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan stood out in the compact SUV segment with its spacious interior, comparable to smaller midsize SUVs. It offered an optional third row, though cargo space was compromised with it in use. The two-row configuration provided 1,064 litres of luggage volume, expanding to 2,078 litres with the rear seats folded. The Tiguan’s interior was comfortable, with leather-wrapped, power-adjustable front seats and excellent outward visibility.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 1,611 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 818 litres with them in use, which was above average for its class. The GV70 featured a hands-free power liftgate and a well-designed front cabin with ample storage options. However, rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-seat adjustments for comfort. The rear bench did recline, offering some flexibility for passengers.

Technology

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan came equipped with standard digital gauges, with the Highline R-Line featuring a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro. The MIB3 infotainment system, with an 8-inch touchscreen, offered connected services and smartphone mirroring. However, the voice recognition system was less impressive. The Highline R-Line included a nine-speaker Fender audio system and an available Park Assist feature.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menus. The GV70 also offered four USB ports, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an available Lexicon 18-speaker audio system. The rotary dial for infotainment control was located near the rotary shifter, which could cause confusion.

Travel Assist and Emergency Assist were available, enhancing adaptive cruise control and lane-centring capabilities. The Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the IIHS, with improvements expected for 2022.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and highway driving assist. The 2.5T Advance Plus added a blind-spot camera and a 360-degree parking camera. The GV70 received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, reflecting its high safety standards.
