2022 Volkswagen Atlas vs 2023 Genesis GV80

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas carried forward the significant updates from its 2021 model, with only minor modifications. Available in four trim levels in Canada—Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and Execline—the Atlas offered a range of features. The Execline trim, which was the top of the Canadian lineup, came with standard R-Line design elements, including 21-inch alloy wheels that enhanced its upscale appearance. Despite its bold styling, the interior of the Atlas was a mix of simplicity and premium flair, though it was let down by the use of low-cost materials and hard plastics, which detracted from the overall quality.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication and grace with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille. The midsize SUV, just shy of 5 metres long, featured 22-inch alloy wheels on the Prestige trim, adding to its stately presence. The interior continued the elegant theme with quilted leather seats, metal and matte wood trim, and a unique two-spoke steering wheel. While the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed somewhat out of place, the spacious and luxurious interior made the GV80 a pleasant place to spend time.

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and a 3.6-litre V6 engine. The four-cylinder produced 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, requiring premium fuel for optimal performance. Despite its power, the V6's performance was considered leisurely, with a towing capacity of up to 2,268 kilograms. The 2023 Genesis GV80 came standard with AWD and offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6. The V6, equipped in the test model, produced 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. While not the quickest in its class, the GV80 excelled in highway driving, with smooth power delivery and an electronically controlled suspension that adjusted to road conditions. The active noise cancellation further enhanced the quiet and comfortable ride.

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas was praised for its roomy interior and comfortable seating for seven passengers. The step-in height was low, making it easy to enter and exit, and the cargo space was exceptional, with up to 2,741 litres available with the seats folded down. However, the unlined storage areas led to unwanted noise from items sliding around.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered a luxurious interior with heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a tri-zone climate control system. The Nappa leather seats were adjustable and featured an Ergo driver’s seat to reduce fatigue. While a third row was available, it was best suited for children due to limited legroom. The GV80 also boasted a large cargo space of up to 2,378 litres and a towing capacity of 2,720 kilograms.

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas featured the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, with an 8-inch display standard and a 10.25-inch display on higher trims. The MIB3 infotainment system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the user experience was hindered by a slow-loading system and cumbersome navigation controls.
