2021 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

Introduced for the 2018 model year, the Volkswagen Atlas is the automaker's latest attempt to win over North American buyers. Built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the VW Atlas competes in the three-row crossover SUV segment against well-established nameplates like the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander. Changes for 2021 are limited to exterior styling tweaks and a reshuffled option list. VW also offers the two-row Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid isn't particularly attractive, sporty, or luxurious. Compared to the performance and refinement of the best three-row SUVs, it's middling at best. The best selling points are its excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing, and in this manner, its nearly unequaled.

Look and feel

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas underwent a styling refresh that included new front and rear bumpers, standard LED headlights and taillights, and a new grille design shared with the Atlas Cross Sport model. These changes added 6 centimetres to its length, giving the Atlas a more extroverted appearance compared to its predecessor. The R-Line trim package further enhanced its sporty look with unique bumpers and side skirts. Despite these cosmetic updates, the Atlas retained its MQB platform, which was shared with other VW models like the Jetta and Golf. The interior followed a minimalist approach, with a standard seven-seat configuration and options for second-row captain’s chairs on higher trims. However, the material quality was below average, with cheap-feeling plastics and faux wood and metal trim.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid borrowed styling cues from the Tacoma pickup, featuring a trapezoidal grille and upright fascia for a rugged look. However, its side profile introduced a swooping character line that added unnecessary visual weight. The interior was unconventional, with an asymmetrical dash and metallic styling elements. The Bronze Edition featured unique 18-inch bronze alloy wheels and light grey fabric upholstery, which was prone to dirt and stains. The Softex synthetic leather substitute was used throughout, with genuine leather available only on higher trims. The third row had more hard plastics, making it less comfortable for longer journeys. Despite its styling quirks, the Highlander Hybrid remained a popular choice due to its hybrid powertrain.

Performance

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offered two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-litre VR6 engine with 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Motion all-wheel drive. The driving experience with the base engine was underwhelming, with adequate acceleration but rough shifts. Handling was truck-like, and the ride quality was poor, with every road imperfection felt in the cabin. The Atlas had a towing capacity of up to 2,267 kilograms with the VR6 engine, but its fuel efficiency was unimpressive, with the four-cylinder engine rated at 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and hybrid system, producing 243 horsepower. It featured a continuously variable transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The hybrid powertrain provided a quick but tepid response from a standstill, with the gasoline engine supplying more power as needed. The ride quality was soft, with the suspension effectively smoothing over bumps. The Highlander Hybrid was quieter than many midsize SUVs, except when the engine was pushed hard. Its braking system seamlessly transitioned from regenerative to physical brakes, contributing to a smooth driving experience.

Form and function

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

6/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offered average passenger and cargo space for its segment, with 2,741 litres behind the front seats and 583 litres with all seats up. It provided more third-row legroom than most competitors, but at the expense of second-row legroom. The second-row bench seat was uncomfortable, with thin cushions. The Atlas featured a tall driving position, but forward visibility was limited. It included up to five USB ports and a wireless charging pad, along with 17 cupholders. Parking sensors and low-speed automatic braking were standard, with active park assist available on higher trims.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's front seats were well-cushioned, with plenty of adjustments for drivers. The second-row seats were spacious, with sliding and reclining captain’s chairs. A second-row bench was available as a no-cost option. The third row was less accommodating, with limited headroom and legroom. Cargo space was 453 litres behind the third row, expanding to 1,370 litres with the seatbacks folded, and 2,387 litres with the second row stowed. Higher trims included a hands-free power liftgate.

Technology

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas featured Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. The base trim had a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while other models had an 8-inch screen with satellite radio. Higher trims offered Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit, replacing analog gauges with a 10.3-inch digital display. The MIBIII infotainment system was introduced later in the model year, adding multi-phone pairing and improved voice recognition. The base audio system was decent, with a 12-speaker Fender audio system available on the Execline trim.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch screen available on the top trim. The system was responsive, with logically organized menus and physical shortcut buttons. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, with wireless charging on Limited and Platinum trims. Satellite radio and remote vehicle monitoring were included with limited trial periods. Navigation and an 11-speaker JBL audio system were standard on higher trims.

Safety

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas received a top “good” rating in all IIHS crash tests, with a “marginal” rating for child-seat anchors and mixed headlight ratings. The NHTSA gave the similar 2020 model a five-star overall rating. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist available on higher trims. The Atlas was set to receive more advanced driver aids later in the model year.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid achieved a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a blind-spot monitor. A surround view camera system and head-up display were available on the top trim. The safety systems generally worked well but could benefit from fine-tuning.
