2022 GMC Canyon Reviews Summary

Compared to full-size models, midsize pickups offer buyers the convenience of the pickup truck body style at a more budget-friendly price. Sure, you sacrifice a bit in the way of interior space and capability, but for many buyers, the smaller footprint and increased efficiency make these midsize offerings more livable.

The GMC Canyon—corporate cousin to the Chevrolet Colorado but with a more premium look and feel—gets a couple of changes for 2022. A new Denali Black Edition equipment package joins the options list, and the High Elevation package has been renamed the Elevation Premium package.

The 2022 GMC Canyon is available in four trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali. We drove the off-road-focused AT4 model for this review.

2022 Toyota Tundra Reviews Summary

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is a full-size half-ton pickup truck with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or available four-wheel drive (4WD). It's offered in four-door Double Cab and four-door CrewMax configurations and five trim levels, some with available upgrade packages and bed length variations. Though it has never been a challenger on the sales charts against the Ford, GM, and Ram trucks, the Tundra has a well-deserved reputation for durability and value and a core group of very loyal owners. With updates in almost every area, the new Tundra makes promises to a new generation of Toyota vehicle buyers.

Look and feel

2022 GMC Canyon

7/10

2022 Toyota Tundra

7/10

The 2022 GMC Canyon, a continuation of the model introduced in 2015, offered a premium aesthetic that set it apart from many of its competitors. The Denali trim, in particular, stood out with its luxurious features, including a distinctive chrome grille, 20-inch diamond-cut machined alloy wheels, and a sophisticated interior with heated and ventilated leather seats. The AT4 off-road version also maintained a high level of luxury, with premium leather seats and a bold exterior design. Even the lower trims, like the Elevation, provided a quality feel, although they featured more standard materials.

In contrast, the 2022 Toyota Tundra marked the beginning of its third generation, showcasing a completely redesigned exterior with a dynamic and expressive look. The Tundra's large hexagonal grille varied in finish depending on the trim, with the TRD Pro featuring unique "TOYOTA" badging. Inside, the Tundra continued the premium trend with a focus on high-quality materials and a cohesive design that linked the interior and exterior. The new model aimed to be a versatile family adventure vehicle, with a spacious cabin and a bold visual statement through its 14-inch touchscreen display in higher trims.

The latter two engines allowed for a maximum towing capacity of 3,175 kilograms when equipped with the Trailering package. The V6 engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, provided ample power and smooth shifting, making it a solid choice for those seeking a balance of performance and capability. The AT4 trim, with its off-road enhancements, offered a stable and confident ride both on and off the pavement.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra introduced two new engines, moving away from the previous V8. The base i-Force engine, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6, delivered 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, while the i-Force Max hybrid variant offered 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, providing smooth power delivery. The Tundra's new chassis and suspension improved handling, with a switch to a multi-link rear suspension enhancing ride quality. The truck's off-road capabilities were further supported by features like the TRD Off-Road package, making it a versatile choice for adventure seekers.
