2022 Kia Sportage Reviews Summary

The 2022 Kia Sportage is a stylish, sophisticated, safe, and–with its available turbocharged engine–speedy SUV. Kia hasn't redesigned it since 2017, but that doesn't mean you should cross it off of your shopping list. Even the technology is up to date.

Compact in size, the 2022 Sportage comes in LX, LX Nightsky, EX, EX Premium S, and SX trim levels with front- or all-wheel drive. LX Nightsky trim is new, replacing the LX S version for 2022. The Sportage EX gains a standard panoramic sunroof for 2022.

In Canada, MSRP ranges from $25,995 to $40,195, plus a destination charge of $1,850. Our test vehicle for this review was an SX, which comes with the turbocharged engine and standard AWD and was also equipped with a cargo mat and a tow hitch. The sticker price came to $42,746, including destination (Canadian, estimated). (A U.S. model is shown; the exterior colour on the test unit is not available in Canada, where the SX comes only with red, white, grey, or black paint.)

2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II and the Willys-Overland company. Fast-forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels, like the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Willys Sport, and Wrangler Sahara, don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

2022 Kia Sportage

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Kia Sportage presented a mixed bag in terms of design. While Kia's signature tiger-nose grille was a hit on models like the Stinger and Sorento, it seemed out of place on the Sportage, resembling a Halloween party fake mustache. Despite this, the Sportage excelled in other design aspects, with its four-dot running light signature reminiscent of the Porsche Macan and a Volkswagen-style symmetry at the rear. The SX trim's 19-inch alloy wheels added to its stylish and planted stance. Inside, the Sportage boasted a Germanic-inspired design with a black dashboard, polished metallic accents, and user-friendly buttons and knobs for easy control of the stereo, cabin temperature, and infotainment system.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler embraced a rugged, no-nonsense design with its brick-like appearance and lack of curves. Available in two-door and four-door Unlimited versions, the Wrangler allowed for door removal, and the optional Dual-Door Group added half doors for enhanced visibility. The Wrangler's windshield folded down, and various top options catered to open-air enthusiasts. Iconic features like wide fenders, a seven-slot grille, and round headlights were standard, while the limited-edition "Reign" purple paint added a touch of flair. Inside, the Wrangler prioritized practicality with easy-to-clean materials and a straightforward design, though it lacked some luxury features found in competitors.

Performance

2022 Kia Sportage

7/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Kia Sportage offered a choice between a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine producing 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, and a more robust 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the SX trim, delivering 237 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the Dynamax all-wheel-drive system was standard on all but the base LX FWD model. The Sportage SX provided quick acceleration, with maximum torque available from 1,450 to 3,500 rpm, and a Sport mode for an energetic driving experience. The suspension system, featuring MacPherson struts and independent multi-link rear suspension, offered a smooth ride, though some body roll and lateral rocking were noticeable.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler catered to off-road enthusiasts with its solid axles and optional differential lockers. Engine options included a Pentastar V6 with 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0-litre Ecodiesel V6 with 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 featured a 6.4-litre V8 engine with 470 hp and torque, while the Wrangler 4xe offered a plug-in hybrid option. The 392 model excelled in off-road performance, with a 58:1 crawl ratio and the ability to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds. However, its on-road performance was hindered by inadequate brakes and vague steering.

Form and function

2022 Kia Sportage

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2022 Kia Sportage, despite its compact size, offered a spacious and comfortable interior. The SX trim featured perforated leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and heated and ventilated front seats. Rear passengers enjoyed generous legroom, air conditioning vents, and USB charging ports, with heated rear seats in the SX trim. While interior storage was ample, the maximum cargo volume fell short of competitors, with 1,703 litres available with the rear seats folded. The Sportage's smart liftgate technology provided hands-free access to the cargo area.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, with heated options available in higher trims or through a cold-weather package. The rear seat could accommodate three passengers in four-door models, but space was tight. Storage for small items was limited, with a flat dash and small glove box and centre console. The Wrangler offered 2,050 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded, slightly less than the Ford Bronco. The Wrangler's removable hard and soft tops provided various open-air options, with the Sky One-Touch power soft top offering quick and easy access to fresh air.

Technology

2022 Kia Sportage

6/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

The 2022 Kia Sportage came equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The SX trim added UVO Intelligence connected services, satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. While the infotainment system was user-friendly, it lacked some advanced features, such as a WiFi hotspot and wireless smartphone mirroring.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler featured a 7-inch touchscreen with the Uconnect infotainment system, with an optional 8.4-inch screen in our tester. The system, while initially complex, offered a logical user experience with off-road pages providing valuable information. Standard features included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. The Wrangler focused on practical technology, with a forward-facing camera and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories, but lacked advanced features like a digital key.

Safety

2022 Kia Sportage

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

The 2022 Kia Sportage offered a range of safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims. The SX trim also included adaptive cruise control. The Sportage received favourable crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS, with the SX earning an Acceptable headlight rating.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's standard safety features were limited to a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control. Advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring and forward collision warning were standard only on higher trims or available as part of an option package. The Wrangler received mixed ratings from the IIHS and a four-star frontal crash test rating from the NHTSA, with a three-star rollover rating.
