2022 Ford Expedition Reviews Summary

Certain cars garner a surprising amount of attention. While driving a 2022 Ford Expedition Limited in Stone Blue Metallic with one of the Stealth Edition option packages, we received numerous compliments on this SUV, and it was all related to the paint colour and the wheels. Fortunately for Ford, the 2022 Expedition’s beauty is more than skin deep. This is a terrific full-size SUV in all ways but one.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II and the Willys-Overland company. Fast-forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels, like the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Willys Sport, and Wrangler Sahara, don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

2022 Ford Expedition

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition underwent significant updates, featuring exterior styling revisions and enhanced infotainment technology. The front of the vehicle showcased a new grille, headlights, and bumper, while the rear was updated with revised taillights, tailgate trim, and a new bumper. Redesigned wheels were introduced across the model lineup. In Canada, the Expedition came standard with a four-wheel drive drivetrain and was available in XLT, Limited, and Platinum trims, with prices ranging from just under $70,000 to over $95,000, excluding the destination charge. The new Timberline trim catered to off-road enthusiasts with all-terrain tires, suspension modifications, and off-roading tech. Inside, the Expedition featured a redesigned dashboard with the new Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems, offering a 15.5-inch touchscreen display. The Limited Stealth Edition, with its leather seats and tech features, provided a luxurious experience despite some F-150 pickup-grade plastic trim.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler maintained its rugged, no-nonsense design, with a boxy aesthetic and the option to remove doors for an open-air experience. The windshield could fold down, and various top options allowed for open-air exploration. The Wrangler's iconic seven-slot grille, round headlights, and exterior hood latches remained, while the tailgate swung out for easy cargo access. The limited-edition "Reign" purple paint added flair to the SUV. Inside, the Wrangler offered practicality with easy-to-clean floor mats and seats, though storage was limited. The body-coloured dash and chunky controls added to its utilitarian charm. The Wrangler's interior was functional, with charging points and a 115-volt outlet, but lacked some luxury features like ambient lighting or massaging seats.

Performance

2022 Ford Expedition

7/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition was powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, delivering 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The engine was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, offering a towing capacity of up to 4,173 kg. Fuel economy ranged from 12.9 to 13.9 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, though the test vehicle observed 14.5 L/100 km. The Expedition's driving dynamics were enhanced by its sport-tuned suspension, though the 22-inch wheels contributed to a harsh ride quality. Despite its size, the Expedition was easy to park, thanks to excellent visibility and parking sensors. On the highway, it provided a quiet and comfortable ride, ideal for long road trips.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler offered a range of engine options, including the standard Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 featured a 6.4-litre V8 engine with 470 horsepower and torque, capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid offered 35 kilometres of all-electric range. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were enhanced by solid axles, differential lockers, and various transfer cases. However, the 392's brakes and steering were less refined, requiring early braking and careful steering input. The Wrangler's off-road prowess was unmatched, but on-road performance was less polished compared to competitors like the Ford Bronco.

Form and function

2022 Ford Expedition

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition excelled in interior space and comfort, with power-adjustable, leather-wrapped, heated and ventilated front seats. The second-row captain's chairs offered ample legroom and climate controls, while the third-row seat provided outstanding leg support. Cargo space was generous, with 546 litres behind the third row, expandable to 2,961 litres with all seats folded. The Expedition Max offered even more cargo capacity. The SUV's electric running boards made entry and exit easy, and the interior was thoughtfully designed for passenger comfort.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, but rear seating was tight, especially in the four-door models. Storage for small items was limited, with a flat dash and small glove box and centre console. Cargo space was 2,050 litres with the rear seats folded, slightly less than the Ford Bronco. The Wrangler's removable tops provided versatility, with options like the Sky One-Touch power soft top for quick open-air access. Charging points were plentiful, with USB ports and a 115-volt outlet, but the Wrangler lacked some luxury features found in other SUVs.

Technology

2022 Ford Expedition

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition featured Ford's Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems, with a 12-inch or optional 15.5-inch touchscreen. Both systems included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Sync 4A offered advanced voice recognition and an adaptive dashcard interface. The Expedition's technology was sophisticated, though some quirks were noted, such as accidental activation of the defroster function. The available dual-touchscreen rear-seat entertainment system featured Amazon Fire TV, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0 made towing easier.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came with a 7-inch or optional 8.4-inch touchscreen running the Uconnect infotainment system. The system included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Jeep's off-road pages provided valuable information for off-road enthusiasts. The Wrangler's tech was practical, with a forward-facing camera and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories. However, it lacked some advanced features like a digital key or over-the-air updates for vehicle performance.

Safety

2022 Ford Expedition

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition offered a comprehensive suite of safety features through Ford Co-Pilot360 packages. Standard features included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims added adaptive cruise control, lane-centring assist, and a surround-view camera system. The Expedition's safety tech was generally effective, though the lane-centring assist had some issues with accuracy and reliability.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's safety features were less comprehensive, with only a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control as standard. Blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control were available on higher trims or as part of an option package. The Wrangler received mixed ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, with some trims receiving Poor ratings for headlights and a three-star rollover rating.
