2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer Reviews Summary

Stylish, affordable, and practical, the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer appeals to a broad cross-section of consumers from the young to the young at heart. Chevy introduced this subcompact crossover SUV as all-new last year, and for 2022 a heated steering wheel and a handful of new paint colours are available. A dealer-installed trailering package is also new for 2022, but with nothing but three-cylinder engines on tap, towing cannot be a good idea.

2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. It’s been the number one seller for the brand in Canada for years, even before Nissan redesigned the Rogue two years ago. Last year, Nissan added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

Look and feel

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was more than just a pretty face, though its appealing styling certainly added to its charm. Chevrolet nailed the proportions, character lines, and small details, with options for a black, white, or red-painted roof enhancing its visual appeal. The Trailblazer was available in four trims: LS, LT, Activ, and RS, with prices ranging from $25,998 to $30,298, plus a $1,900 destination charge from its South Korean factory. The RS trim, which we tested, had a sticker price of $37,653, including options and destination charges, but the interior's hard plastic made it hard to justify the cost.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, maintained a conservative design approach, ensuring it appealed to a broad audience. Its proportions and chiseled styling conveyed a rugged purpose, crucial for attracting buyers. The Rogue lineup included S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, with prices from $30,898 to $43,748, excluding a $1,920 destination charge. Our test vehicle, a US-spec Platinum trim, featured AWD, two-tone paint, and a host of upscale features, including diamond-pattern leather seats. While its price approached that of the Infiniti QX50, the Rogue's interior quality and comfort made it a compelling choice.

Performance

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

6/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer featured a turbocharged 1.3-litre three-cylinder engine, producing 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. This engine, paired with a CVT in FWD models and a nine-speed automatic in AWD versions, offered a sprightly driving experience. The AWD model also boasted a more sophisticated rear suspension, enhancing ride and handling. The Trailblazer RS trim rode on 18-inch aluminum wheels with 22/55 all-season tires, providing nimble handling and a sporty feel. However, it was noisy on highways, and its suspension struggled with speed bumps. Fuel economy was 9.0 L/100 km, slightly above the official rating.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue introduced a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, delivering 201 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque from 2,800 to 4,000 rpm. The CVT, with paddle shifters, powered the front wheels, with AWD available. The Rogue offered multiple driving modes, including Eco, Auto, and Sport, with additional Off-Road and Snow modes for AWD models. While the VC-Turbo powertrain was responsive in urban settings, it lacked highway passing power. Fuel economy was 8.1 L/100 km, slightly below expectations. The Rogue's suspension provided a composed ride over speed humps, but its steering felt lifeless.

Form and function

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite its small size, offered impressive functionality. It could accommodate four people comfortably, with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat in the RS trim. The rear seat, though roomy, had flat cushions for a flat load floor when folded. Cargo space was generous, with 716 litres behind the rear seats and 1,540 litres with them folded. The front passenger seat also folded flat, allowing for long items like surfboards.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue served as a practical family car replacement, comfortably seating four adults, with room for a fifth in a pinch. Our Platinum test vehicle featured premium leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Rogue's rear doors opened wide, aiding in loading and unloading, and the rear seat offered climate controls and USB ports. Cargo space was ample, with 1,028 litres behind the rear seats and 2,064 litres with them folded. However, the rear seat comfort was lacking, with low cushions and quilted pleats.

Technology

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer came with a comprehensive infotainment system, featuring a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Our test vehicle had the larger screen, with access to Spotify, SiriusXM, and an optional Bose audio system. The system was user-friendly, with physical controls for easy navigation. Remote engine starting and a keyless entry keypad were available.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue used an older infotainment system with an 8-inch or 9-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and wireless Apple CarPlay. Our test vehicle had the larger screen, a Bose audio system, and a wireless charging pad. However, the voice recognition struggled with complex commands. The Rogue also featured a 12.3-inch digital display and a head-up display, both of which performed well.

Safety

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer prioritized safety with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder, and Teen Driver technology. Chevy Safety Assist included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more. Optional features included blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control. The Trailblazer earned top crash-test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue boasted a comprehensive safety suite, including 10 airbags, Safety Shield 360, and NissanConnect services. Higher trims offered ProPilot Assist with adaptive cruise control and lane-centring. The Rogue earned a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, though it had some lower scores in specific tests.
