2021 Toyota Sienna Reviews Summary

Toyota’s minivan got a major makeover for 2021, now entering its fourth generation of production since debuting as a 1997 model. For the first time, the Sienna gets a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain, and not only that—it’s standard equipment. The Sienna Hybrid is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K) platform, shared with the Highlander and other current Toyota models.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, it's superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Sienna

9/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid aimed to redefine the minivan aesthetic, traditionally not known for its style. With SUV-like styling, the Sienna featured a wide grille and sleek LED headlamp arrays, giving it a modern and assertive stance. The redesigned sliding side doors, with a sculpted body line, added to its appeal, while various alloy wheel sizes enhanced its overall look. Inside, the Sienna emphasized width with horizontal lines, offering a comfortable seating position and a simple, uncluttered dashboard. The interior was designed for practicality, with a bridge-like centre console providing ample storage space and a smart tray for personal items. The second and third-row seats were comfortable for adults, with the second row offering flexibility for maximum utility.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler maintained its rugged, off-road persona, with a focus on practicality and durability. The Wrangler's interior was basic, with cloth upholstery and dominant plastic and rubber materials. The driving position was close to the steering wheel and dashboard, requiring some acclimation. Visibility varied, with some challenges due to the spare tire and roof design. Rear-seat passengers faced entry and exit difficulties, but once inside, they enjoyed a good view and practical features like air conditioning vents and grab handles. Storage options were limited, with netting on door panels and small compartments. The Wrangler's design prioritized its off-road capabilities and unique driving experience over luxury and refinement.

Performance

2021 Toyota Sienna

8/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid marked Toyota's first foray into hybrid minivans, featuring a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, producing a combined 243 horsepower. The Sienna offered both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options, with the latter using a separate electric motor for the rear wheels. The electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT) provided smooth power delivery, though it lacked the punch of a conventional automatic. The Sienna's handling was improved with new suspension systems, offering a comfortable and stable ride. Fuel efficiency was a highlight, with FWD models rated at 6.6 L/100 km in the city and 6.5 L/100 km on the highway, while AWD models achieved slightly higher figures.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine and eTorque mild-hybrid system, delivered 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The eight-speed automatic transmission and Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system enhanced its off-road capabilities. However, the Wrangler's fuel consumption was higher, averaging 14.0 L/100 km during testing. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, with its rugged nature and open-air design offering an immersive experience. Despite its off-road prowess, the Wrangler's on-road performance was characterized by loud cabin noise, vague steering, and a rough ride, traits that endeared it to enthusiasts but might deter those seeking comfort.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

The 2021 Toyota Sienna excelled in convenience and functionality, with a standard third-row seat that folded into the floor and a second row that slid up to 63.5 cm for easy access. The cabin boasted 16 cupholders and ample storage space, while the Sienna's cargo capacity was impressive, accommodating a full four-by-eight sheet of plywood. The hybrid battery was cleverly positioned under the front seats, preserving cargo space. Power-operated sliding doors and a rear liftgate added to its family-friendly features.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, with its raised suspension, posed challenges for entry and exit, especially for shorter individuals. The interior offered comfortable seats and durable materials, but storage options were limited. The Wrangler's cargo space was accessible via a swing-out tailgate and flip-up rear window, providing 898 litres behind the rear seat and 2,050 litres with the seat folded. The Wrangler's design prioritized off-road capability and ruggedness over interior space and convenience.

Technology

The 2021 Toyota Sienna was packed with technology, featuring a standard nine-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offered a Premium Audio + JBL package with 12 speakers and a rear-seat entertainment system. The Sienna also included a range of connectivity features, such as Safety Connect and Remote Connect, and a digital rearview mirror on select models.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, based on the Sport S trim, had a basic infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and smartphone integration. Optional upgrades included a larger Uconnect system with satellite radio and a premium audio system. The Wrangler's tech options included remote engine starting, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel, enhancing its practicality for open-air driving.

Safety

The 2021 Toyota Sienna came equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, offering a comprehensive suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist, and a pre-collision system. The Sienna received high safety ratings, with a "Top Safety Pick+" from the IIHS and a Five-Star Overall Rating from NHTSA.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered optional safety features through the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, including blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were less impressive, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA and Marginal ratings from IIHS. The Wrangler's safety features were optional, and its design required careful driving.
