2021 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

Redesigned from the top down for the 2021 model year, the third-generation Nissan Rogue features numerous improvements, including in areas that aren’t obvious: on top of its engine and exterior and interior design, the platform and chassis are also entirely new to this nameplate. This means that all Rogue buyers benefit from the best of its improvements, not just those who can afford the top trim. This overall value contributed to making the new Rogue a Canadian award winner in its segment as judged by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

2022 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

Since its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only manufacturing facility north of the Mexican border. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that.

Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Updates include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features. (Interestingly, while the BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup in the United States, it continues in 2022 in Canada. This model is not covered in this review.)

Look and feel

2021 Nissan Rogue

8/10

2022 BMW X3

7/10

The 2021 Nissan Rogue underwent a complete redesign, giving it a more muscular and imposing presence. Its squared-off nose featured a deeper interpretation of Nissan’s V-Motion grille design, flanked by standard LED headlamps and separate LED daytime running lights. Functional forward air vents and active grille shutters contributed to a lower coefficient of drag, despite the Rogue's boxier proportions. The exterior colour palette was simplified to a few basic colours, with additional two-tone options available on the Platinum grade. Inside, seating surfaces varied from cloth to semi-aniline quilted Nappa leather, depending on the trim level, with the Platinum model offering the most luxurious interior.

The 2022 BMW X3 presented a slightly more aggressive stance with a larger kidney grille and adaptive full LED headlights. The rear featured new taillights with a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs. The X3 was available in nine finishes, with new metallic colours introduced. Standard 19-inch gray aluminum-alloy wheels were paired with all-season run-flat tires, and an optional aerodynamically optimized wheel was available. The M Sport Package added sporty elements like larger air intakes and sport brakes. Inside, the X3 offered a clean and efficient design with a variety of inserts, adjustable seats, and a panoramic moonroof. Interior colour choices varied by material and model, with ambient lighting enhancing the cabin's atmosphere.

The 2021 Nissan Rogue featured a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. This engine was paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and offered a balanced performance for its weight, ranging from 1,536 to 1,653 kilograms. Fuel efficiency was respectable, with figures of 8.9 L/100 km in the city and 7.0 on the highway for the front-wheel-drive model. The Rogue's handling was improved with a 27% increase in torsional rigidity and a revamped suspension system, providing a stable and planted road feel.

The 2022 BMW X3 xDrive30i was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The M40i variant featured a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, producing 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The M40i offered a more exhilarating drive with features like a flap-controlled sports exhaust system and adaptive suspension. The mild-hybrid system provided additional power but did not significantly improve fuel efficiency.

The cargo space was generous, with 1,028 litres available with the seats upright and 2,064 litres with them folded. The Divide and Hide cargo system was redesigned for better usability.

The 2022 BMW X3 provided ample space for five passengers, with a 40/20/40-split rear seat configuration. The cargo area was spacious enough for multiple bags and equipment, with a power tailgate standard. The interior featured comfortable SensaTec seats, with Vernasca leather available for added luxury. The redesigned centre console and larger infotainment system improved ergonomics and accessibility. The X3's sport seats offered support, and the vehicle's overall design was tailored for comfort and practicality.
