What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Wilderness trim stands apart with 23 centimetres of ground clearance, more aggressive all-terrain tyres, improved approach and departure angles, a unique grille, black 17-inch wheels, blacked-out exterior trim with Anodized Copper accents, a matte black hood decal, StarTex water-repellant upholstery, heated seats, a black headliner, brushed aluminium pedals, standard all-weather floor mats, and waterproof rear seatback and cargo-tray materials. It is the most purpose-built choice if you want the rugged look and extra outdoor utility.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four engine with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. It also has standard all-wheel drive, revised final-drive ratios, a 3,500-lb towing capacity, and a setup tuned for gravel, dirt, mud, and foul weather.
• Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
• Infotainment: The cabin uses an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with integrated climate control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but most functions run through the screen, and the voice recognition system is not especially natural to use.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it should use 10.9 L/100 km in city driving and 8.9 L/100 km on the highway. In testing, it averaged 11.0 L/100 km on a mountainous route.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep scarcity.

• Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 299 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.86% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $29,177 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $29,177 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,732 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. A lower current average can help keep used demand moving, especially for shoppers comparing value across similar crossovers. The Outback’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, but resale will still depend on condition, mileage, and equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.86% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It is the debut Wilderness model, built to preserve EyeSight while improving off-road capability.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $26,975 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $29,177 CAD average.
• It focuses on practicality, reliability, and low running costs.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $31,862 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $29,177 CAD average.
• It adds fresh styling, updated infotainment and safety tech, and the Onyx Edition.

The bottom line: If you want the most adventure-focused version of the Outback family, the 2022 is the one to target. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2021 is the value play. If you want newer updates and can spend more, the 2023 is the better step up.
