What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Wilderness stands out with 23 centimetres of ground clearance, all-terrain tyres, skid plating, and a roof rack and rail system rated for a 700-pound static load. It also adds a matte black hood decal, black 17-inch wheels, and water-repellant StarTex upholstery, while heated seats are included instead of ventilated ones.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with Subaru’s CVT. It also has all-wheel drive, revised final-drive ratios, and X-Mode with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings.
• Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. It also adds steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included.
• Infotainment: The Wilderness uses an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with integrated climate control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but most functions run through the screen.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it should use 10.9 L/100 km in the city and 8.9 L/100 km on the highway. In testing, it averaged 11.0 L/100 km on a mountainous route.

• Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 305 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.90% compared with last year.

What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $28,228 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,041 CAD.

That softer pricing can be a plus if you’re buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. A lower entry price can help support demand, especially for shoppers who are comparing used examples against newer alternatives.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.90% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the Wilderness formula, which focuses on tougher capability and preserving EyeSight calibration for modified vehicles.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,844 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,228 CAD average.
• It is a practical, value-focused AWD wagon with strong safety and utility.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $31,392 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,228 CAD average.
• It brings fresh styling plus updated infotainment and safety technology.

The bottom line: If you want the most adventure-focused Outback and can live with the higher price, the 2022 is the one to target. If your priority is lower purchase cost, the 2021 is the smarter value play. If you want newer tech and styling, the 2023 is worth the extra money.
