Is the 2022 Subaru Outback a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Subaru Outback earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its safety features, snowy-weather performance, and rugged look. It also comes across as a practical choice for everyday use, especially if you want a vehicle that balances utility with all-wheel-drive confidence and outdoor capability.

The market also shows 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, with repeated praise for its safety, performance in snowy conditions, and overall value for the price. That kind of feedback usually lines up with a dependable ownership experience, especially when buyers want something they can count on in rough weather and daily use.

The expert evaluation also frames it as a vehicle built around capability and practicality, with a powertrain and chassis setup intended to handle demanding conditions without losing its everyday usefulness. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the more specialised Wilderness hardware may have seen harder use than a standard commuter vehicle.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Wilderness trim adds 23 centimetres of ground clearance, more aggressive all-terrain tyres, revised bumpers for better approach and departure angles, black 17-inch wheels, blacked-out trim with Anodized Copper accents, a matte black hood decal, and a roof rack and rail system rated for a 700-pound static load. It also gets StarTex water-repellant upholstery, heated seats, a black headliner, brushed aluminium pedals, all-weather floor mats, waterproof rear seatback material, and a waterproof cargo tray.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. The Wilderness also uses revised final-drive ratios, hill descent control, and X-Mode with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes.
• Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. It also includes steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
• Infotainment: The Wilderness uses an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with integrated climate control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, but most functions rely on the touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it should use 10.9 L/100 km in city driving and 8.9 L/100 km on the highway.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 305 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.74% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $28,778 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $28,778 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,607 CAD.

That softer pricing can be good news if you're buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. A lower current average can help attract shoppers, yet it may also limit upside if you plan to resell in the near term.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness's crash-test results were not available as this review was written. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), standard Outbacks earned a "Top Safety Pick+" safety rating for 2021. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2021 Outback a five-star overall rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.

One important caveat is that DriverFocus distraction mitigation technology is not available on the Wilderness trim.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.74% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It introduces the Wilderness as a more capable, adventure-focused Outback with standard EyeSight and rugged hardware.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $26,137 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,778 CAD average.
• It prioritises practicality, reliability, and low running costs.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $31,427 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,778 CAD average.
• It adds fresh styling, updated infotainment and safety tech, and the Onyx Edition.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive and capable version of this Outback generation, the 2022 Wilderness is the clear pick. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want newer updates and can spend more, the 2023 is worth a look.
