Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.77/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its rugged durability, spacious interior, off-road capability, and convenient technologies like adaptive cruise control and Apple CarPlay. The overview also points to its reliability, resale value, utility, rugged image, and go-anywhere character, which makes it especially appealing if you want a purposeful SUV rather than a soft crossover.

With 35.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, there is still a decent amount of market value to be found.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback repeatedly highlights rugged durability, reliability, and a solid investment feel, while the expert assessment says you can depend on the 4Runner’s dependability and that it seems indestructible even when used hard. That combination points to a vehicle built for long-term ownership, especially if you want something you can keep for years.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about durability and more about living with its age-related compromises and fuel costs over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail trim is the entry point and comes with black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, all-season floor mats, and no heated front seats. The SR5 sits above it and can be paired with TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro packages in Canada.
• Powertrain: Every 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. Part-time 4WD is standard, and the truck-like setup is part of the appeal if you want real utility.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not included.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, five USB ports, and a year of Safety Connect. Higher packages can add a dynamic navigation system and Destination Assist concierge services.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it uses 13.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test average was 14.0 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: Trail and SR5.

Here's the short version:

• Trail: This is the one to focus on if you want the most straightforward, purpose-built 4Runner experience. It gets black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, all-season floor mats, and the standard off-road traction control system. It is the best fit if you value the 4Runner’s rugged character more than extra comfort features.
• SR5: This is the better starting point if you want more flexibility, since it can be paired with TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro packages in Canada. Those packages add more capability or equipment, and the SR5 is the trim to watch if you want the broadest range of configurations.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not available.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 135 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.70% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $46,801 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $46,889 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,358 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively today. For a future seller, it also means the 4Runner’s value remains supported, but you should not expect the same pricing strength seen a year ago. The model’s rugged reputation and strong owner satisfaction should continue to help it hold demand better than many mainstream SUVs.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a Good roof crush strength rating from IIHS, but it also gets a Marginal result for driver protection in a small overlap frontal-impact collision and a three-star front passenger rating in a frontal-impact crash from NHTSA.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. However, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not included, and the lack of those features is a notable gap.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.70% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the rugged, utility-first character that makes the 4Runner appealing.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $43,881 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $46,889 CAD average.
• It is a purpose-built SUV for rough terrain and real off-road use.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,298 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $46,889 CAD average.
• It adds modern infotainment and safety tech while keeping the rugged 4Runner formula.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price movement, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2021 is the sensible default. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2020 is worth a look; if you want a newer-feeling version with more modern tech, the 2022 is the upgrade path.
