Toyota backs it with a five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is accepting a rugged SUV that can feel dated and less refined than newer alternatives.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail grade includes push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, an 8-inch touchscreen, and Toyota Safety Sense P. It also starts with two-row seating, while the Limited package adds three rows and more comfort-focused equipment.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a single 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic and standard 4WD with low range. It is reliable, but it can feel dated and underwhelming in everyday driving.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Some of these features depend on the automatic transmission.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation and a 15-speaker JBL audio system are available.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates 14.8 L/100 km in the city, 12.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.8 L/100 km combined. The Limited’s full-time 4WD system is rated at 14.9 L/100 km city and 12.6 L/100 km highway.

Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: Trail, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off Road, Limited, TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• Trail: This is the entry point and the best-value starting place if you want the 4Runner’s core rugged character without paying for extra luxury or appearance upgrades. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, Toyota Safety Sense P, and the standard 4WD setup.
• SR5: This trim is the next step up in the range and suits you if you want a more mainstream 4Runner without jumping into the more specialised TRD or Limited versions.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more road-oriented setup, including 20-inch alloy wheels and X-REAS performance suspension, plus TRD styling touches.
• TRD Off Road: This is the one to choose if off-road capability matters most. It adds a locking rear differential, crawl control, active traction control, multi-terrain select, KDSS, and unique off-road hardware.
• Limited: This is the comfort-focused choice, with heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, and three-row seating. It is the best fit if you want the most everyday comfort.
• TRD Pro: Pick this if you want the most trail-focused hardware and the most aggressive equipment list, including enhanced Fox shock absorbers, an aluminium front skid plate, and a basket-style roof rack.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but heated front seats are not included on the Trail grade.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 149 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.75% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $49,292 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $49,298 CAD sits slightly below last year's $56,500 CAD.

That price decline suggests buyers have more negotiating room today than they did a year ago. For a future seller, it also means the market has already adjusted downward, so holding value will depend more on condition, trim, and equipment than on broad market momentum.

The 4Runner’s rugged reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, especially among shoppers who specifically want a traditional SUV. Even so, its resale strength will likely remain tied to its niche appeal rather than broad mainstream demand.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Some of these features are tied to the automatic transmission.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.75% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps rugged SUV character while adding modern infotainment and safety tech.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $46,889 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $49,298 CAD average.
• It emphasises reliability, utility, and rugged capability.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $54,794 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $49,298 CAD average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the 4Runner’s rugged personality with modern basics and a softer market. If price matters most, the 2021 is the value play; if you want a bit more convenience tech, the 2023 is worth a look.
