Used 2021 Toyota 4Runner for SaleNationwide

How much does the 2021 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have softened 6.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 142 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its rugged durability, spacious interior, off-road capability, and convenient technologies. That lines up with the 4Runner’s clear use case: you’re buying a midsize SUV that prioritises utility, rugged image, and go-anywhere character over polish. It’s especially appealing if you want a vehicle that feels purpose-built rather than crossover-like.

Good and great deals account for 36.6% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to rugged durability, reliability, and a vehicle that feels like a solid investment for families and off-road enthusiasts. The expert assessment also describes it as dependable and even “indestructible” in long-term use, which reinforces the 4Runner’s reputation for being easy to count on over time.

Toyota’s ownership proposition is helped by the model’s long service life and durable construction, though you should still expect higher fuel costs than you would with a more efficient SUV. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is accepting age-related compromises in refinement and efficiency.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail trim is the most stripped-back version, with black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, no heated front seats, and manual air conditioning. The SR5-based versions add more available packages, while the Limited stands out as the more chrome-heavy, upscale-looking choice.
• Powertrain: Every 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and a five-speed automatic. It’s built for durability and off-road use, but it feels slow, heavy, and clunky on pavement.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not included.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, five USB ports, and a year of Safety Connect. Higher packages can add dynamic navigation and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it uses 13.8 L/100 km in combined driving and 12.5 L/100 km on the highway. The expert review recorded 14.0 L/100 km during testing.

Which 2021 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: Trail and SR5.

Here's the short version:

• Trail: This is the entry point, and it’s the one to choose if you want the most straightforward 4Runner experience. It comes with the basic rugged setup, black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and the old-school cabin layout that suits the truck’s mission. It’s the best-value choice if you care more about capability and simplicity than luxury touches.
• SR5: This is the better starting point if you want more flexibility, because it opens the door to packages such as TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro. If you want to build toward a more equipped or more specialised 4Runner, this is the trim to start with.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not available.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market: there are enough listings to shop carefully, and pricing has eased from last year.

• Deal availability: 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 142 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.81% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $46,804 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $47,259 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,711 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also suggests future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment if the market keeps easing. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and rugged utility should continue to support demand. Its strong owner satisfaction also helps preserve appeal when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a Good roof crush-strength rating from IIHS, but it also receives a Marginal result for driver protection in a small overlap frontal-impact collision and a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA, along with a three-star front passenger frontal-crash rating.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. However, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not available.

The safety results reflect the 4Runner’s age, so if crash protection is a top priority, you should weigh those limitations carefully.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.81% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines rugged utility with strong resale appeal and a clear off-road focus.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $43,699 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $47,259 CAD average.
• It offers strong capability and standard advanced safety features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,776 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $47,259 CAD average.
• It adds modern infotainment and safety tech while keeping the 4Runner’s rugged character.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, satisfaction, and rugged utility, the 2021 is the main path to consider. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2020 is the value-oriented alternative.
