How much does the 2021 Toyota 4Runner cost?

There are 130 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.77/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its rugged durability, spacious interior, off-road capability, and useful technologies like adaptive cruise control and Apple CarPlay. It also fits buyers who want a purposeful SUV with real utility, a rugged image, and go-anywhere capability rather than a soft, car-like crossover.

The market still shows healthy interest, with 36.9% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback repeatedly points to rugged durability, reliability, and a vehicle that feels like a solid long-term investment. The expert assessment also describes it as dependable and even “indestructible” in hard use, which reinforces the 4Runner’s reputation for being easy to count on over time.

Toyota’s cost-effectiveness notes also suggest long-term ownership appeal, with the model’s durability and value retention helping offset its age. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is not whether it will last, but whether you can live with its fuel use and truck-like manners for the long haul.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail trim is the most stripped-back version, with black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, no heated front seats, and all-season floor mats. The SR5 can be paired with TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro packages in Canada, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want more comfort or capability.
• Powertrain: Every 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It is built for durability and off-road use, but it feels slow, heavy, and clunky on pavement.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. It does not include blind-spot warning or rear cross-traffic warning.
• Infotainment: The standard 8-inch touchscreen includes Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, five USB ports, and a year of Safety Connect. Higher packages add dynamic navigation and Destination Assist concierge services.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it uses 13.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test average was 14.0 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: Trail and SR5.

Here's the short version:

• Trail: This is the entry point, and it suits you if you want the most straightforward 4Runner experience with standard part-time 4WD, a simple cabin, and the core rugged character that defines the model.
• SR5: This is the better-value choice if you want more flexibility, since it can be paired with TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro packages in Canada. It gives you the broadest path to the equipment and capability you want without starting from the most basic setup.

The Trail trim’s lack of heated front seats and its basic interior make it the most stripped-down choice, while the SR5’s package availability gives you more room to tailor the truck to your needs.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.

• Deal availability: 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 130 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.42% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $46,808 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $47,187 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,968 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you buy now, because you may be entering at a more favourable point in the cycle. For a future seller, the current trend suggests there is still demand, but the market is not pushing prices upward the way it was a year ago.

The 4Runner’s reputation for durability and utility should help support demand over time, especially among buyers who specifically want a rugged SUV. If you keep it in good condition, its strong identity and loyal following should remain useful when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a Marginal rating from IIHS for small overlap frontal-impact protection, and a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA. It also earns a three-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact crash from NHTSA.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. However, it does not include blind-spot warning or rear cross-traffic warning, which is a notable gap for a vehicle of this size.

The main caveat is that the 4Runner’s crash results reflect its age, especially compared with newer designs that use more advanced structural engineering. If safety is your top priority, you should pay close attention to those limitations.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the 4Runner’s rugged, old-school SUV character while adding modern infotainment and safety tech.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $43,398 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $47,187 CAD average.
• It is a purpose-built off-road SUV with a rough-and-ready character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,183 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $47,187 CAD average.
• It keeps the rugged formula while better bridging traditional toughness with modern buyer expectations.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price, satisfaction, and current-market availability, the 2021 is the sensible default. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2020 is the cheaper route into the same rugged 4Runner formula, while the 2022 makes sense if you are willing to pay more for the next model year’s refinements.
