Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and strong performance, and many also highlight the spacious third row and solid interior layout. The review summary also points to a great driving experience and features that make it a solid family choice.

The trade-offs are clear: it is not especially refined on-road, and fuel efficiency remains a common complaint. That fits the 4Runner’s role as a rugged SUV for you if you value capability, space, and a traditional feel more than modern polish.

Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the starting point and the basis for the 40th Anniversary Special Edition, so it makes sense if you want the core 4Runner experience without paying for extra styling or specialty hardware.
• TRD Sport: This trim adds a suspension tuned to improve on-road athleticism, so it suits you if you want a slightly more road-focused setup.
• Limited: This is the best-value choice if you want the most polished everyday setup, because it adds a suspension tuned for on-road athleticism and full-time 4WD.
• 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is the style pick, with retro graphics and bronze accents, but it is more about exclusivity than added capability.
• TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the most trail-oriented setup short of the top model, including a suspension that improves wheel articulation by disconnecting the sway bars.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road version, with a skid plate and a suspension tuned for high-speed performance in the dirt with front and rear Fox shock absorbers.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on every trim level.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 113 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.66% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $54,866 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $54,899 CAD sits slightly below last year's $60,106 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more reasonable level today, but it also means future resale may depend heavily on how well the market continues to value rugged SUVs. If demand stays steady, the 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and durability should help support used values.

For a future seller, the key advantage is that this model still has a loyal audience. The downside is that its age, fuel economy, and safety reputation may limit how much pricing power you can recover later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with no better than a three-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and a three-star rating for rollover resistance.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level this year.

The main caveat is that the crash-test results are unimpressive for a vehicle this tall and rugged, and IIHS also gives it a Marginal rating for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.66% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, plus the limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,535 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $54,899 CAD average.
• It keeps the rugged, old-school SUV character while staying relevant with modern infotainment and safety tech.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $56,505 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $54,899 CAD average.
• It remains a capable off-road SUV with strong reliability and durability, but trails newer rivals in key areas.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current pricing and updated safety equipment, the 2023 is the sensible pick. If your priority is lower purchase cost, the 2022 is the better value path. If you want to stay close to the same formula but are willing to pay more, the 2024 keeps the core strengths intact.
