Is the 2020 Kia Soul a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Kia Soul earns a 4.67/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, fun driving experience, stylish design, modern features, and gas mileage. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Soul’s use case as a compact, boxy vehicle that blends small-SUV utility with compact-car refinement.

The main trade-offs are that performance is fairly pedestrian and some comfort issues have been noted, including the driver’s seat not tilting. Even so, the Soul’s lower starting price than many rivals and its easy-to-use technology help it make sense if you want value, space, and personality in one package.

The expert assessment also describes the Soul as a useful hatchback that delivers refined driving dynamics and a solid, polished feel, which supports confidence in day-to-day use.

Kia’s maintenance coverage can also help reduce early ownership costs on some examples, depending on how the vehicle was serviced. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car has been maintained properly and that any wear items or unresolved issues are checked before you buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Kia Soul?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is pretty basic, but it still includes heated front seats, body-colour heated side mirrors, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The EX adds alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, and driver-assistance features, while the EX Limited brings more comfort and convenience equipment such as a head-up display, premium audio, leather seats, ventilated front seats, and heated outboard rear seats. CarGurus recommends the EX trim as the best-value choice.
• Powertrain: Most trims use a 2-litre, 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. The engine is described as refined and capable of decent acceleration, with a Sport button and manual mode for a more responsive feel.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The EX adds blind-spot warning, rear cross-path detection, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, and forward-collision warning and avoidance, while the EX Limited and GT-Line Limited add adaptive cruise control and pedestrian detection.
• Infotainment: The LX, EX, and EX+ use a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get a 10.25-inch screen. All trims include Kia’s UVO infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2-litre engine and CVT return 8.6 L/100 km in the city, 7.1 L/100 km on the highway, and 7.9 L/100 km combined. In mixed driving, the observed figure was 8.0 L/100 km.

Which 2020 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2020 Kia Soul is offered in 7 trim levels: LX, EX, EX+, EX Premium, EX Limited, GT-Line Premium, and GT-Line Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the least expensive way into the Soul, and it gives you the core appeal of the model: a roomy cabin, a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, and heated side mirrors. It makes sense if you want the Soul’s practicality and style at the lowest price.
• EX: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, and the key driver-assistance features that many shoppers will want, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, lane-change assist, and forward-collision warning and avoidance.
• EX+: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, and cloth-and-synthetic-leather seats, so it suits you if you want a nicer look and feel without jumping all the way to the upper trims.
• EX Premium: This trim brings the larger 10.25-inch infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and 18-inch wheels, making it a good fit if you want a more upscale daily driver.
• EX Limited: This is the comfort-and-tech upgrade. It adds rain-sensing wipers, advanced forward collision avoidance assist, a head-up display, Harman Kardon premium audio, adaptive cruise control, leather seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, and heated outboard rear seats.
• GT-Line Premium: This trim builds on the EX Premium with sport bumpers and side sill accents, roof rails, and a sport steering wheel, so it suits you if you want a more aggressive look.
• GT-Line Limited: This is the top trim and adds the same sport-themed upgrades on top of the EX Limited’s richer equipment list.

The EX trim is the one to target if you want the strongest mix of price, equipment, and everyday usefulness, while the upper trims are best if you specifically want more comfort, tech, or styling.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Kia Soul?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you’re comparing multiple listings.

• Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 195 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.67% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $14,877 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $15,099 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,120 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy now, you’re entering at a lower average cost than a year ago, which can help cushion depreciation if the market stays steady. Well-equipped examples with strong condition and service history should be easier to move later than stripped-down or neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Kia Soul safe?

The 2020 Kia Soul earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and a four-star safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The EX trim adds forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path detection. The EX Limited and GT-Line Limited add adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and pedestrian detection for the forward-collision warning and avoidance system.

One important caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard on the base trim, so you’ll want to verify the equipment level carefully if safety tech matters to you.

Should I buy a 2020 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It stands out for refined driving dynamics, a lower starting price than most competitors, and form and function delivered in equal quantities.

The bottom line: The 2020 Kia Soul is the right pick if you want the model’s distinctive styling, roomy cabin, and strong value at a softer used-car price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the current market makes it worth shopping carefully for a well-kept example with the equipment you want, especially in the EX trim or better.
