CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Honda HR-V
Summary
With 42 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,887 CAD, 31.0% of 2020 Honda HR-V listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda HR-V 4.5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda HR-V stands out as a practical subcompact SUV that blends a higher driving position with the easy manoeuvrability of a smaller car. It is part of the first-generation HR-V, which first appeared in North America in 2016, and it helped popularise the segment by pairing SUV versatility with a compact footprint. Honda’s Magic Seat system is one of its defining features, giving the rear seats multiple folding configurations for different cargo and passenger needs. That flexibility, along with the HR-V’s reputation for reliability, makes it especially appealing to buyers who want an affordable, everyday utility vehicle.
For 2020, the HR-V also benefits from the 2019 mid-life refresh, which brought revised body panels, upgraded LED headlights, and a new infotainment system with physical buttons and a volume knob. The facelifted model also included Honda Sensing as standard, adding more advanced safety systems. Buyers could choose from front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the available continuously variable transmission was tuned more for fuel economy than performance. The HR-V’s strengths are clear: good practicality, strong value, and useful cargo space. Its limitations are just as clear, with modest acceleration, an early infotainment setup that was not especially impressive, and some owner complaints about seat comfort and the lack of more modern features.

Is the 2020 Honda HR-V reliable?

The owner feedback also highlights reliability, quality, and a trouble-free ownership experience as part of the appeal. That makes the HR-V a sensible choice if you want a used SUV you can count on for daily driving and long-term use. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright dependability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and still feels comfortable to live with.

What is the 2020 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $21,643 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,832 CAD.
That kind of price movement suggests the HR-V has already absorbed some of its recent depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. Because the current average is still within the model’s year-round range, you may have a reasonable window to buy without paying peak pricing. If demand remains supported by practical features and strong owner satisfaction, resale values should stay relatively resilient compared with less popular alternatives.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2020 HR-V makes the most sense if you want a practical, well-liked subcompact SUV with strong value and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you are price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a lower asking price outweighs the 2020 model’s refreshed features and strong owner approval.
