CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Kia Soul
Summary
With 43 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,974 CAD, 39.5% of 2016 Kia Soul listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Kia Soul 4.65 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Soul stands out because it combines quirky styling with a practical, value-focused package. In the second-generation Soul, Kia kept the original’s footprint but gave it smoother sides, a higher front grille, and more balanced proportions, making it look less like a tall hatchback and more like a scaled-down SUV. It also gained a slightly longer, wider, and stiffer chassis, along with a quieter cabin, suspension upgrades, and a tailgate that opened six centimetres higher for easier cargo access. The result was a small vehicle with a lot of interior room and a more polished feel than its shape might suggest.
For 2016, the Soul’s appeal also came from its equipment and powertrain choices. The 1.6-litre inline four-cylinder made 130 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, while the upper trims used a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder with direct injection that made 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual was standard and a six-speed automatic was optional with the smaller engine. In Canada, the trim range included LX, EX, and SX, with features such as Bluetooth, heated front seats, roof rails, keyless entry, cruise control, a rear-view camera, leather upholstery, and 18-inch wheels depending on trim.
That mix of personality and practicality is what made the 2016 Kia Soul attractive to buyers. It offered distinctive styling, lots of room, and good value, while owners also tended to appreciate its spacious interior, fuel economy, comfort, and handling. The main trade-offs were that earlier models could be slow, and there were reliability and recall concerns to keep in mind.

Reviewed a 2016 Kia Soul on Apr 29, 2022
This model year is perfect for me, as I really wanted to retain the hatchback quality, while getting a slightly larger interior than my old Toyota Matrix. It feels so much larger inside, much more rommy for a tiny female, but even my brother, who is very broad shouldered feels comfortable. This 2016model DOES NOT have a screen, which I like (the 2017s do). The two front seats are comfortable and there are4 cup holders in the front of the car, which are a PAIN when there are not enough. The radio, cruise control, hands free talking on my phone are all on the steering wheel, two 12v, aux and USB plugins in the dash/radio area plus the Bluetooth capability make more opportunities for hands free answering/listening. The boot is not large and a tray can be lifted out to access the factory tire repair kit and there is NO SPARE. The interior is two toned cloth on this model, but I wouldnt have it any other way! I think this car is a good value in comparison to say a Hyundai sonata. The size is very similar, but its just short and has a little bit more interior personality. I also looked at a Kia Sorento, and I did not like it nearly as much as I like the Soul. The only thing that I would want in a car going forward, is, some sort of screen that pulls away from the back two seats towards the opening of the hatchback, just to cover up what things you have in the trunk however it was pointed out to me and Im learning to be okay with the fact that the back windows are tinted so dark that it is nearly impossible to see the contents of what you have in the boot of the car. Overall, Im really excited about owning this car! Its really a fairly compact car fits in small car spaces, its very roomy on the inside and has enough power to do the job I need it to do. Drive around town and occasionally take me out of town.

How much does the 2016 Kia Soul cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,073 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $9,000 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $11,115 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,034 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −17.77% |
Prices have softened 17.77% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 120 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Kia Soul earns a 4.65/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, great gas mileage, solid performance, comfort, handling, and affordability. That lines up well with the Soul’s practical, value-focused design and its appeal if you want a small vehicle with lots of room and a distinctive shape.
With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2016 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, with praise centred on the car’s comfort, fuel economy, and overall value. That kind of feedback suggests the Soul can be a sensible choice if you want something you can count on for everyday use.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained properly and still feels consistent in the areas owners care about most.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 120 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.77% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $9,000 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $9,073 CAD sits slightly below last year's $11,034 CAD.
That price drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may face more competition when it is time to list. If you buy at the current average, you may have less room for appreciation than in a stronger pricing environment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Kia Soul makes the most sense if you want a value-focused, roomy small vehicle and you can find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep an eye out for the best-deal listings first; if you want a newer-feeling alternative, a nearby model year may be worth comparing for its different market position.
