Summary

Why it stands out
Among subcompact crossovers, the 2020 Hyundai Kona stands out most for how it drives. It is one of the smallest vehicles you can buy with all-wheel drive, yet it still delivers the higher seating position and hatchback practicality that crossover shoppers expect. Hyundai also gives it a generous list of convenience and safety features for the class, while the exterior styling and on-road performance are especially strong.
The 2020 model year brought a new trim level and more standard driver assists, which adds to its appeal if you want a small crossover with useful equipment. At the same time, the Kona is not the most convincing choice if value and space matter most: it is cramped, the interior disappoints, and cargo room is limited. Even so, its fun-to-drive character and distinctive design make it a compelling option for buyers who care more about personality and road manners than maximum practicality.

The ONLY reason it got a 4 star is because I used have minivans. It's smaller, but AWESOME! Phone links right up and can use my driving apps and the seats are heated :) So easy to drive with all the safety features!

I enjoy driving this car. I like the sunroof, the leather seats, all the electronics and of course the colour. I do think this car is good value, and have not found yet what it might be missing. I cant make comparisons as I dont know that much about cars.

Prices have softened 14.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 356 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.68/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, responsive handling, and stylish design. They also like the good features and fuel efficiency, which fit well with the Kona’s role as a small crossover that still feels lively on the road.
The trade-offs are clear: the interior materials are hard and the cargo area is small. That lines up with the overview, which frames the Kona as a good fit if you value personality, road manners, and useful equipment more than maximum practicality.
Only 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards shoppers who compare carefully.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.68/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers describe it as efficient, fun to live with, and a vehicle they enjoy owning over time. The feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers appreciating the Kona’s good features and the confidence that comes from its overall character.
On the expert side, the Kona’s performance is described as strong and confidence-inspiring, with a responsive powertrain and a chassis that feels stable and well sorted. Hyundai also notes that the turbocharged engine runs on regular octane fuel, which helps keep day-to-day ownership straightforward.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the same small size and interior compromises that show up early can remain frustrating if you need more space or refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model is well equipped for the class, but the higher trims add more desirable convenience and safety equipment. The cabin quality is still a weak point, so you should judge whether the added features are enough to offset the hard plastics and limited space.
- Powertrain: The 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque is the standout choice, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The 2.0-litre engine is less energetic, though it does use a traditional 6-speed automatic instead of a CVT.
- Safety package: The Kona includes forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor as standard equipment. Pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate, and the model does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags.
- Infotainment: The base setup uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. Higher trims can add an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, and the system also includes proximity entry.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-litre FWD model is rated at 7.9 L/100 km combined, while the 2.0-litre AWD model is rated at 8.6 L/100 km combined. The 1.6T AWD model is rated at 8.6 L/100 km combined.
Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, and Luxury.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the Kona’s core strengths: standard 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and proximity entry. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is the least compelling choice if you want the turbo engine or more upscale equipment.
- Preferred: This trim adds more comfort and convenience while staying below the turbo models. It is the better value if you want a well-equipped daily driver without stretching to the pricier trims.
- Trend: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it brings the 1.6-litre turbo engine, standard all-wheel drive, and the equipment most drivers will want. It also gets the stronger performance character that defines the Kona.
- Luxury: This trim adds more premium equipment, including a sunroof and adaptive cruise control. It suits you if you want the most complete non-Ultimate package and are willing to pay more for convenience features.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but pedestrian detection is reserved for the Ultimate.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 356 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.22% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $17,775 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $17,792 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,743 CAD.
That price drop suggests the Kona has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand from shoppers who want a stylish small crossover without paying new-car money. For a future seller, it also means you may need to price competitively if you want to stand out in a market with plenty of listings.
The Kona’s strong driving character and good feature content should help it remain appealing to buyers who value personality and equipment. At the same time, its limited space and interior quality may cap how much premium it can command over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.68/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2020 Kona scored five-star ratings overall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with maximum ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test, and it scored four-star ratings in the rollover risk test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Kona comes standard with forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated it a 2020 Top Safety Pick for top crash-test results, optional LED headlights, and a top Superior rating for forward emergency braking.
One caveat is that pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate, and the IIHS noted a lower score for detecting a person than another vehicle. The Kona also does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.68/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a new trim level and more standard driver assists.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,350 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,792 CAD average.
- It offers a broader trim range and more value-forward positioning.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2020 if you want the lower price and the same core Kona personality, especially if you value its driving feel and standard equipment. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the 2020 is the smarter path; if you want more trim variety and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is worth a look.
