Why it stands out
Among subcompact crossovers, the 2020 Hyundai Kona stands out most for how it drives. It is one of the smallest vehicles you can buy with all-wheel drive, yet it still delivers the higher seating position and hatchback practicality that crossover shoppers expect. Hyundai also gives it a generous list of convenience and safety features for the class, while the exterior styling and on-road performance are especially strong.
The 2020 model year brought a new trim level and more standard driver assists, which adds to its appeal if you want a small crossover with useful equipment. At the same time, the Kona is not the most convincing choice if value and space matter most: it is cramped, the interior disappoints, and cargo room is limited. Even so, its fun-to-drive character and distinctive design make it a compelling option for buyers who care more about personality and road manners than maximum practicality.

The ONLY reason it got a 4 star is because I used have minivans. It's smaller, but AWESOME! Phone links right up and can use my driving apps and the seats are heated :) So easy to drive with all the safety features!

I enjoy driving this car. I like the sunroof, the leather seats, all the electronics and of course the colour. I do think this car is good value, and have not found yet what it might be missing. I cant make comparisons as I dont know that much about cars.

Prices have softened 14.80% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 344 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.68/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, responsive handling, stylish design, and good features. The user feedback also points to fuel efficiency as a plus, which helps if you want a small crossover that feels lively without being hard to live with.
The trade-offs are clear: the interior materials are a weak point, and cargo space is limited. That matters because this model is aimed at shoppers who want crossover practicality in a small footprint, but not necessarily the most room or the most polished cabin.
The market also shows 32.0% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.68/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the Kona as a vehicle they can count on over time. The expert evaluation also notes that Hyundai is typically expected to bring long warranties and good reliability, which supports the Kona’s appeal for long-term use.
It also does well on the dependability front in daily driving, with a powertrain that feels eager and a chassis that stays composed. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the cabin space and interior quality will meet your expectations over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model gives you a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, proximity entry, heated front seats, and heated side mirrors, while higher trims add a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation. If you want the most useful equipment, the midpack Trend is the one to focus on.
- Powertrain: The 1.6-litre turbocharged inline-four makes 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, while the standard 2.0-litre inline-four makes 147 hp and 132 lb-ft. The turbo is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and standard AWD, while the non-turbo uses a 6-speed automatic.
- Safety package: The Kona includes lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, and forward emergency braking as standard equipment. Pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate, and the model does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags.
- Infotainment: You get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth on the base model, while the Ultimate adds an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation. Wireless smartphone integration and over-the-air updates are not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.6T AWD is rated at 9.0 L/100 km city, 8.0 highway, and 8.6 combined. The 2.0 AWD returns 9.2 city, 7.8 highway, and 8.6 combined, while FWD models can achieve 7.9 L/100 km combined.
Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, and Luxury.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Kona experience with the standard 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, heated front seats, and heated side mirrors. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is not the trim that best captures the Kona’s stronger value story.
- Preferred: This trim adds more equipment while staying below the turbo models, so it is the sensible step up if you want a better-balanced daily driver without stretching too far. It suits you if you want more comfort and convenience than the base model without chasing the pricier performance setup.
- Trend: This is the best-value trim because it brings the 1.6-litre turbo engine, standard AWD, and the features most drivers will want. If you care most about the Kona’s fun-to-drive character, this is the one to target.
- Luxury: This trim is for you if you want the more upscale equipment set, including the sunroof and adaptive cruise control. It adds comfort and convenience, but it asks a lot more money for a small crossover with limited space.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, with forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor standard on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 344 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.80% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $17,719 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $17,719 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,797 CAD.
That drop suggests the Kona is currently in a buyer-friendly phase, which can be good news if you are shopping now but less ideal if you are planning to sell soon. A softer market usually means future sellers may need to price more competitively to attract attention.
Even so, the Kona’s strong styling and fun-to-drive reputation help keep it visible to used shoppers. Models that stand out on personality and equipment often hold demand better than plain alternatives.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.68/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2020 Kona earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test, plus a four-star rating in the rollover risk test. It also earns a 2020 Top Safety Pick from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Kona includes forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor as standard equipment. Pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate trim, and the model does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.80% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.68/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a new trim level and more standard driver assists.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,290 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,719 CAD average.
- It offers a wider trim spread and remains value-forward with plenty of standard features.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2020 if you want the better price and are happy with its strong driving character and standard safety equipment. If you are willing to spend more for a broader trim range and a slightly newer model year, the 2021 is the secondary path to consider.
