Hyundai’s ownership proposition is helped by the model’s broad standard equipment and straightforward mechanical setup, which can make used ownership feel less risky than a more complicated alternative. What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Kona’s trims range from Essential to Ultimate, and the lower trims are the ones most likely to leave you wanting more equipment. The cabin is simple and intuitive, with standard cloth upholstery, while higher trims add leather on the steering wheel and seats. If you want the best value, the mid-range trims are the sweet spot because they add more comfort and convenience without pushing the price too far.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine or an optional turbocharged 1.6-litre engine. The base engine is paired with a six-speed automatic, while the turbo engine uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. FWD is standard on Essential and Preferred, with AWD available there and standard on higher trims.
• Safety package: Every Kona comes with forward-collision avoidance assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades, while lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and parking sensors are available.
• Infotainment: Every Kona gets an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB inputs. Available upgrades include SiriusXM radio, navigation, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen, though that larger screen is not compatible with wireless smartphone connectivity.
• Fuel efficiency: With FWD and the base engine, the Kona returns 8.6/7.0/7.9 L/100 km city/highway/combined. With AWD and the base engine, it uses 9.2/7.8/8.6 L/100 km. The turbo engine with AWD is rated at 9.0/8.0/8.6 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona is offered in 6 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, Luxury, Urban Edition, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, but it is best if you are focused on keeping costs down and can live with the most basic equipment.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday usability while staying close to the lower end of the range.
• Trend: This is a smart step up if you want a stronger mix of comfort and features without jumping too far in price.
• Luxury: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for it.
• Urban Edition: This suits you if you want a more distinctive, better-equipped version of the Kona.
• Ultimate: This is the top choice if you want the most equipment and do not mind paying for it.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades, so that safety-package detail is worth checking when you compare trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

• Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 382 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.23% compared with last year.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $19,025 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,927 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Kona is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly. If you plan to sell later, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, trim, and equipment level.

The good news is that the Kona’s value-oriented reputation and broad appeal can help support demand over time. A model with strong owner satisfaction tends to stay attractive to used shoppers, which can help resale performance.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.23% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It remains a value-forward small crossover with plenty of standard features.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $17,582 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $19,025 CAD average.
• It is especially appealing if you want a smaller, more road-focused Kona with strong style.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,338 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $19,025 CAD average.
• It brings a more polished refresh with upgraded styling, powertrains, and features.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want a strong mix of value, features, and current-market pricing. If you are price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the refreshed look and added upgrades.
