CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Hyundai Kona
overall

Summary
With 318 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,473 CAD, 31.4% of 2020 Hyundai Kona listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Hyundai Kona 4.68 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
Why it stands out
Among subcompact crossovers, the 2020 Hyundai Kona stands out more for how it drives than for how much value it delivers. It is one of the smallest cars you can buy with all-wheel drive, yet it still offers the higher seating position and lifted stance many crossover shoppers want. Hyundai also gives it a generous list of convenience and safety features for the class, which helps it feel well equipped despite its size.
For 2020, the major changes are a new trim level and more standard driver assists. That keeps the Kona feeling current, while its stylish design and fun-to-drive character remain its biggest strengths. On the road, it is described as spectacular, and that lively personality is a major part of its appeal.
The trade-offs are just as clear. The 2020 Hyundai Kona is cramped, the interior disappoints, and cargo space is limited. It is also considered poor value for money, so buyers are getting a small crossover with strong style and engaging performance rather than a particularly spacious or bargain-priced one.

The ONLY reason it got a 4 star is because I used have minivans. It's smaller, but AWESOME! Phone links right up and can use my driving apps and the seats are heated :) So easy to drive with all the safety features!

I enjoy driving this car. I like the sunroof, the leather seats, all the electronics and of course the colour. I do think this car is good value, and have not found yet what it might be missing. I cant make comparisons as I dont know that much about cars.

| Year-Round High | $20,249 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,249 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −13.72% |
Prices have softened 13.72% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 322 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.68/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, responsive handling, and stylish design. They also like the good features and fuel efficiency. In use, that lines up with the Kona’s small footprint, higher seating position, and crossover practicality.
The trade-offs are clear: it is cramped, the interior quality disappoints, and cargo space is limited. It also leans more toward style and driving enjoyment than outright value.
With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you can still find some market opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.68/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the Kona’s good features and fuel efficiency. The expert evaluation also notes that Hyundai is expected to bring long warranties and good reliability, which supports confidence in day-to-day use.
The Kona’s maintenance and ownership story looks reassuring for used buyers, but its small size and limited cargo room mean you should still check whether it fits your long-term needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Kona’s styling is strong across the range, but the base model is more basic inside, while Trend and Ultimate add larger wheels and extra grey trim. The cabin quality remains a weak point, so pay close attention to material condition and whether the features you want are present.
- Powertrain: The 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque is the lively choice, while the 2.0-litre engine is slower and less energetic. Front-wheel drive is standard on the entry grades, and all-wheel drive is optional with the 2.0-litre engine but standard with the turbo.
- Safety package: The Kona includes a driver-assistance suite with lane-keep assist and a driver attention monitor, and forward emergency braking is standard. Pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate, so check whether the trim you’re considering includes that feature.
- Infotainment: Base models get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. Higher trims can add an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, and the system also includes proximity entry on every Kona.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.6T AWD is rated at 9.0 L/100 km city, 8.0 highway, and 8.6 combined. The 2.0 AWD returns 9.2 city, 7.8 highway, and 8.6 combined, while FWD models can achieve 7.9 L/100 km combined.
Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, Luxury.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Kona, but it is the most basic version of a model whose strengths are style and standard equipment. It makes sense if you mainly want the Kona shape and don’t need many extras.
- Preferred: This is the better everyday choice if you want a more complete feature set without moving too far up the price ladder. It is the trim to focus on if you want a balanced used buy.
- Trend: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 1.6-litre turbo engine and standard all-wheel drive, which are the Kona’s most appealing mechanical upgrades. If you want the most enjoyable version to drive, this is the one to target.
- Luxury: This trim adds more comfort and convenience equipment, including a sunroof and adaptive cruise control. It suits you if you want a better-equipped Kona and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package includes lane-keep assist and a driver attention monitor on every trim, while pedestrian detection is reserved for the Ultimate in the expert test-drive notes.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 322 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.72% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $17,465 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $17,471 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,249 CAD.
That decline suggests the Kona is currently in a softer pricing phase, which can be good news if you are buying now but less favourable if you plan to sell soon. A lower market average can also mean future resale gains may be more gradual unless demand strengthens.
Even so, the Kona’s strong styling and fun-to-drive character help it stay appealing to used shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.68/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2020 Kona scored five out of five stars overall in crash tests approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with maximum ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test. It scored four out of five stars in the rollover risk test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated the Kona a 2020 Top Safety Pick for scoring the top Good rating in six crash tests, the optional LED headlights, and the top Superior rating for forward emergency braking.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Kona comes standard with forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. Pedestrian detection is only available on the Ultimate, and the IIHS noted a lower score for detecting a person than another vehicle. It also does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.68/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Expert or safety highlight specific to this year from the 2020 update: more standard driver assists and a Top Safety Pick rating.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,314 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,471 CAD average.
- It adds a broader trim lineup and a more value-forward positioning.
The 2020 is the better pick if you want the lower price and the same core Kona appeal. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model-year setup and a wider trim spread, the 2021 is worth a look. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2020 remains the smarter shopping target.
