CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Summary
With 127 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,377 CAD, 37.0% of 2017 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Sonata 4.36 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a roomy, well-equipped midsize sedan that was designed to offer a lot of car for the money. In its seventh generation, it leaned into a more conservative look than the model it replaced, while still aiming to feel tech-forward and efficient. That combination of affordable pricing, generous standard equipment, and a comfortable cabin is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want a practical family sedan without paying premium-brand money.
For 2017, the Sonata came with the 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine making 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.0T and 2.0T Ultimate used a turbocharged 2.5-litre four with 245 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. Standard equipment was strong for the class, including a tiny 3.5-inch LCD screen, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and a tilt-and-telescope wheel, with more features available as options. By this point, the car also had a reputation for being comfy and well equipped, and it earned a good deal of praise for value.
The main drawbacks are worth noting. Consumer Reports gave the 2017 and 2018 models well below-average reliability ratings, with issues centred on excessive oil consumption and premature wear in the Theta II engine family. This generation was also vulnerable to theft, which can mean higher insurance costs and extra precautions for owners. Even so, the 2017 Hyundai Sonata remains attractive if you want a spacious, feature-rich sedan at a relatively low price and are prepared to inspect carefully.

I bought a Sonata with the SE trim, so no power seats, blind spot indicator, heated seats or anything like that. However, it does have TPMS, Apple CarPlay, great backup camera, lots of rear seat leg room and is very solid and comfortable. Gets great gas mileage too! Overall, an excellent value.

2017 Hyundai Sonata Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2017 Hyundai Sonata prices has changed over time.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,383 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $11,378 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $12,553 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,537 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.21% |
Prices have softened 9.21% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 127 listings available, which gives you a useful amount of inventory to compare before you decide.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Generally — 4.36/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and drivers consistently point to its dependability, affordability, and smooth driving experience. The review summary also highlights good fuel economy and strong value for the price, which fits the Sonata’s role as a roomy, well-equipped midsize sedan for practical family use. If you want a comfortable, feature-rich car without paying premium-brand money, this model year lines up well with that use case. With 34.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding one that fits your budget.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to dependability and trouble-free everyday use as recurring strengths, and some owners specifically mention the car’s affordability and smooth driving character. At the same time, the review summary also flags concerns about theft and engine reliability in higher-mileage vehicles, so used buyers should inspect carefully and review maintenance history closely. For long-term ownership, the main risk is not day-to-day comfort but whether the specific car has been affected by those known problem areas.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 127 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.21% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $11,378 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $11,383 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,537 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Sonata has softened enough to create a more buyer-friendly entry point, but it also means future sellers may face some pressure if the market stays soft. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned to limit depreciation losses later. The model’s value-oriented reputation can help support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a comfortable, well-equipped sedan.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.21% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Sonata makes sense if you want a roomy, comfortable, value-focused sedan and you can verify the condition of the specific car you’re considering. If your priority is stretching your budget, this year is worth a close look because pricing has eased and deal availability is decent. If you want the broadest shopping pool, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2017 remains a sensible primary target for buyers who value affordability and equipment.
