Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a roomy, well-equipped midsize sedan that was designed to offer a lot of car for the money. In its seventh generation, it leaned into a more conservative look than the model it replaced, while still aiming to feel tech-forward and efficient. That combination of affordable pricing, generous standard equipment, and a comfortable cabin is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want a practical family sedan without paying premium-brand money.
For 2017, the Sonata came with the 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine making 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.0T and 2.0T Ultimate used a turbocharged 2.5-litre four with 245 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. Standard equipment was strong for the class, including a tiny 3.5-inch LCD screen, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and a tilt-and-telescope wheel, with more features available as options. By this point, the car also had a reputation for being comfy and well equipped, and it earned a good deal of praise for value.
The main drawbacks are worth noting. Consumer Reports gave the 2017 and 2018 models well below-average reliability ratings, with issues centred on excessive oil consumption and premature wear in the Theta II engine family. This generation was also vulnerable to theft, which can mean higher insurance costs and extra precautions for owners. Even so, the 2017 Hyundai Sonata remains attractive if you want a spacious, feature-rich sedan at a relatively low price and are prepared to inspect carefully.

I bought a Sonata with the SE trim, so no power seats, blind spot indicator, heated seats or anything like that. However, it does have TPMS, Apple CarPlay, great backup camera, lots of rear seat leg room and is very solid and comfortable. Gets great gas mileage too! Overall, an excellent value.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.36/5 user rating, which points to solid owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its dependability, affordability, and smooth driving experience, and many also like the good fuel economy and value for the price. It fits well if you want a roomy, well-equipped midsize sedan with a comfortable cabin and strong everyday practicality. With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights dependability and a trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, which is encouraging if you want a used sedan you can count on. At the same time, some owners mention concerns about engine reliability in higher-mileage vehicles, so a careful inspection matters. For used buyers, the long-term ownership risk is worth taking seriously, especially if the car has not been well maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 131 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.54% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $11,358 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $11,358 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,555 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you plan to own it for a while, the lower entry price can help offset some depreciation risk. If you expect to resell sooner, you should be realistic about value retention and focus on condition, mileage, and service history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.54% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a sensible pick if you want a roomy, comfortable, and value-focused midsize sedan at a softer price point. If you are price-sensitive, this year deserves a close look because the market is offering meaningful discounts. If you want to compare alternatives, nearby model years may be worth considering, but the 2017 remains a strong option when you find a well-kept example at the right price.
