CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Sonata
Summary
With 11 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,900 CAD, 18.2% of 2017 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Sonata 4.36 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that was designed to feel tech-forward and efficient while still staying affordable. It offered generous standard equipment for the money, and its equipment list included a tiny 3.5-inch LCD screen, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and a tilt-and-telescope wheel. Buyers could also get leather upholstery, navigation, blind spot monitoring, and other features, which helped make the car feel well equipped even in a crowded class.
For 2017, the Sonata used two main powertrains: a 2.4-litre four-cylinder with 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and a turbocharged 2.5-litre four with 245 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. Both were paired with a conventional six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The hybrid was not part of the lineup at launch, since the seventh-generation Hybrid only appeared in the 2016 model year. That means the 2017 Sonata’s appeal was centred more on its gas models, which balanced everyday comfort with respectable efficiency and a broad feature set.
There are also a couple of important caveats for used buyers. Consumer Reports gives the 2017 and 2018 models well below-average reliability ratings, with issues centred around excessive oil consumption and premature wear in the Theta II engine family. The car is also vulnerable to theft, which can mean higher insurance premiums and extra precautions. Even so, the 2017 Sonata remains attractive because it is affordable, comfortable, and well equipped, with a premium-feeling interior and a reputation for being a good value when everything checks out.

I bought a Sonata with the SE trim, so no power seats, blind spot indicator, heated seats or anything like that. However, it does have TPMS, Apple CarPlay, great backup camera, lots of rear seat leg room and is very solid and comfortable. Gets great gas mileage too! Overall, an excellent value.

How much does the 2017 Hyundai Sonata cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,219 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $11,213 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $12,349 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,315 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.90% |

There are 132 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.4/5 user rating, which points to solid owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its dependability, affordability, and smooth driving experience, and many also like the good fuel economy and value for the price. That lines up well with its role as a tech-forward, efficient, and affordable midsize sedan with a generous feature set for everyday use. With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights its dependability and trouble-free day-to-day use, and some owners specifically point to its long-term value and smooth ownership experience. At the same time, used buyers should stay attentive to maintenance history and mileage, since long-term ownership risk can rise if the car has been neglected or driven hard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 132 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.90% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $11,213 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $11,219 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,315 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. If you plan to resell later, the current trend suggests you should focus on condition, service records, and trim appeal to help protect value. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of affordability, features, and current market value, the 2017 is the stronger starting point. If you’re more price-sensitive and want to widen your search, a nearby model year can still make sense, but the 2017 stands out when you want a well-equipped Sonata at a softer used-car price.
