Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Outback stands out as the point where Subaru officially positioned the model as a crossover rather than a wagon, while keeping the familiar all-wheel-drive formula that made it popular. Its styling was evolutionary and a little sportier and more aerodynamic than before, but not dramatically different, and it remained a practical, roomy vehicle with strong all-weather capability. For buyers who want a used vehicle that feels familiar, useful, and capable without looking dated, that combination is a big part of its appeal.
Mechanically, the 2015 model came with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine rated at 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, which is the engine most used buyers will encounter. A 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine was available on the 3.6R Touring and Limited packages, making 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque, but it was less popular because of its 10.5 L/100 km combined fuel consumption and higher price. Subaru also made AWD standard, paired the Outback with a continuously variable transmission with a six-speed manual shift mode, and added X-Mode, hill-descent control, and hill-start assist to help in slippery conditions. The cabin was improved too, with a 6.2-inch standard screen on the base model and a 7-inch unit on higher trims, while EyeSight driver-assist technology was available only on upper trims and included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning.
There are trade-offs, though. The CVT can feel droning and listless on the highway, and it still does not return the greatest fuel economy. Higher trims are the better buys if you want more safety equipment, and the model as a whole is known for being quieter and more refined than earlier versions, with a little more back seat space than before.

My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

Luxurious look and feel. Safe and reliable. Tons of cargo room and decent fuel economy with AWD

The Subaru Outback 3.6R is the absolute best iteration of the Outback. Test driven model years 2013, 2015 & 2019 and the Outback just gets better and better. If you can find a 3.6R Limited trim level, be quick to snatch it up before I do -- LOL! I truly believe this wagon is worth every penny.
