Reviews Summary

The Ford Expedition isn’t for everyone, but for shoppers who need a combination of interior space and powerful towing capability, it’s one of only a few quality options on the current market. All-new for the 2025 model year, the Expedition retains subdued styling on the outside, but its tech-forward interior looks impressively futuristic. The addition of the new-for-2025 Ford Expedition Tremor means the Expedition is now prepared to travel further off-road than any before.

Verdict: The Tremor is undeniably cool, and for such a large vehicle, the Expedition is surprisingly easy to drive in everyday circumstances. With a starting price just over $82,000 before fees in Canada (or $85K for a Ford Expedition MAX), there’s no disputing that Ford’s selling an expensive vehicle. However, both the Expedition and Expedition MAX offer a ton of standard equipment, and given their capability, both are priced in line with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban.

Reviews Summary

There aren’t many subcompact crossovers on the market with hybrid powertrains. As such, it’s tough to weigh the new 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid against a field of other options. The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is its primary competition. The Kia Niro Hybrid is exclusively front-wheel drive (FWD), and vehicles such as the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid all compete in the larger compact crossover segment. If shoppers want a fuel-efficient and genuinely small crossover with great all-wheel-drive capability, the new Crosstrek Hybrid is the best available choice.

Verdict: With its attractive styling, comfortable interior, and tested AWD system, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek delivers a terrific package, even if it’s not as efficient as some larger (and more expensive) competitors.

Look and feel

2025 Ford Expedition

6/10

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

8/10

The 2025 Ford Expedition was a testament to the form-over-function design ethos, reminiscent of a modern school bus but with a more attractive flair. Its slab sides and rectilinear silhouette ensured ample headroom, legroom, and shoulder room, making it clear that this vehicle was designed for transporting people comfortably. Despite its functional design, Ford's designers did not completely disregard styling. The Expedition featured horseshoe-shaped daytime running lights framing a bold grille that spanned the entire width of the fascia. Integrated headlights and off-roading lamps on the Tremor trim added to its full-width appearance. The blacked-out B-, C-, and D-pillars gave the glass a wraparound look, while a distinct character line ran from the headlights to the taillights. The rear of the vehicle sported a two-tone paint job, thanks to a black tailgate, and introduced a split-gate design for added convenience.

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid continued the evolutionary improvements seen in previous generations, maintaining its attractive design. The most noticeable update was the frameless grille with a curved wing bar, creating a visual connection with the headlights and giving the fascia a Cheshire cat-like smile. The black-plastic cladding around the wheel arches included integrated aerodynamic air inlets and outlets, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing road noise. Inside, the Crosstrek Hybrid offered a balance of rugged utility and refined comfort, with a straightforward design philosophy. Material quality was consistent, with soft-touch surfaces and durable plastics. The Canadian model featured black leather upholstery, chrome-trimmed power window switches, and "Hybrid"-stitched floor mats. Standard features included heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power moonroof, contributing to an airy atmosphere.

Performance

2025 Ford Expedition

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

8/10

The 2025 Ford Expedition was powered by a twin-turbocharged “EcoBoost” 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. The Tremor trim offered a high-output version with 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Despite its 2,628-kilogram curb weight, the Expedition's powertrain excelled on highways, providing a comfortable and quiet ride. The ten-speed automatic transmission ensured smooth shifts, and the multi-link rear suspension handled rough terrain well. The Tremor trim, with its increased ground clearance and off-road modifications, performed admirably on challenging courses. However, the Expedition's fuel economy was poor, rated at 15.4 L/100 km in the city and 10.7 on the highway.

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid featured a 2.5-litre Atkinson/Miller-cycle engine paired with an 118 hp traction motor, resulting in a total system output of 194 hp. This made it the fastest Crosstrek to date, with smoother acceleration than the gas-only version. The hybrid powertrain utilized two motor-generators for engine start/stop functions and regenerative braking. During testing, the Crosstrek Hybrid recorded 7.6 L/100 km, slightly above the estimated 6.5 L/100 km. Subaru's AWD system, combined with X-Mode traction management, provided excellent off-road capability. The Crosstrek's steering was light but precise, thanks to a revised dual-pinion steering rack.

The 2025 Ford Expedition excelled in towing capacity, with a maximum of 4,350 kilograms. Inside, it offered 611 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 3,072 litres with all seats down. The Expedition's minimalist interior design featured touch-sensitive trackpads and a touchscreen for climate controls. The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid improved on previous iterations by offering more cargo space, with 527 litres behind the rear seats and 1,433 litres with the rear row folded. It retained a 63-litre fuel tank, allowing for long-distance travel. The Crosstrek provided ample rear-seat space, with 926 millimetres of legroom, and included practical storage solutions.

The 2025 Ford Expedition boasted a 24-inch driver information display and a 13.2-inch touchscreen with a Google-based operating system. The Ford Connectivity Package was essential for full functionality, requiring a subscription after the first year. The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid featured an 11.6-inch touchscreen, but its software was slow and laggy. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, and the Crosstrek Hybrid included a Harman Kardon stereo and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.

The 2025 Ford Expedition had not been rated by the NHTSA, but it came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. BlueCruise 1.4 was available for hands-free driving. The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA for 2026, but it included Subaru's EyeSight ADAS, with features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and pre-collision braking.
