2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Reviews Summary

The 2024 Land Cruiser is an all-new model. Its coming was presaged by the Lexus GX with which it shares a platform, but Toyota made sure that this midsize SUV falls squarely in its own segment.

Verdict: The new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is the latest in a spate of automotive reboots, and it just may be the best of them. The new Land Cruiser combines retro styling and excellent off-road capability with the latest in comfort and convenience and, of course, brand heritage. But Toyota may be relying too heavily on the revered nameplate to justify the price, particularly since it’s changed some of the fundamental characteristics of the model.

2024 Honda Passport Reviews Summary

While many automakers resort to daring designs or flashy tech in their efforts to stand out amid a crowded midsize SUV market, Honda takes a different approach. The 2024 Honda Passport has been refreshed for this year, but few would notice. There are no big-screen TVs in this SUV, no futuristic materials or shocking styling choices. Instead, the Passport goes simple: a proven engine, easy-to-use technology, and enough (but not too much) capability to make it appealing in all weather.

The Honda Passport’s V6 engine makes impressive power, and the TrailSport trim level tested in this review adds extra capability courtesy of some all-terrain tires and an off-road-tuned suspension. Although its 2024 refresh doesn’t make the Honda Passport a segment leader in any specific category, it will still find plenty of buyers who want a practical, spacious, safe, and reliable crossover SUV.

Look and feel

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

2024 Honda Passport

6/10

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser embraced its iconic status with a distinctive, boxy design reminiscent of its predecessors. The J250 model featured a flat roof and a heritage grille with "TOYOTA" spelled out, echoing the 40 series. The First Edition trim showcased round headlights reminiscent of the 20 series, while other trims had rectangular headlights akin to the FJ62. All lighting was LED, blending classic inspiration with modern standards. Higher trims offered colour-selectable fog lights, adding a contemporary twist. The lowered beltline improved visibility, and the vehicle came standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, with 20-inch options available. Inside, the base trim had cloth seats, while higher trims featured SofTex or real leather with unique logos. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were standard, with additional features like a moonroof and ventilated seats in higher trims. The cabin emphasized comfort with cushy seats and attractive stitching.

In contrast, the 2024 Honda Passport retained much of its previous design, despite Honda's updated design language across other models. The Passport featured a more upright grille and squared-off corners since 2022, maintaining a connection to Honda's earlier designs. Available in three trims—Sport, TrailSport, and Black Edition—the Passport offered a power moonroof, identical touchscreens, and AWD across all trims. The TrailSport trim, designed for ruggedness, included all-terrain tires and standard roof rails and LED fog lights in Canada. However, its rugged appearance was more aesthetic, with plastic skid plates and no lift kit. Inside, the Passport had physical controls and an 8-inch touchscreen. The TrailSport trim featured black leather upholstery with orange stitching and a simple, utilitarian design with ample storage space.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser featured a hybrid powertrain with a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 1.87-kWh battery pack, and a 48-hp electric motor, producing a total of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. It had an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard full-time 4WD with a two-speed transfer case. The Multi-Terrain Select system operated in both 4Hi and 4Lo, and the vehicle included rear- and centre-locking differentials. A push-button disconnect for the front sway bar was available on all but the base model. The updated CRAWL control function offered five speed settings for off-road precision, operating silently. The Land Cruiser excelled in off-road conditions, with features enhancing its capability and comfort.

The 2024 Honda Passport, on the other hand, came with a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Managed by a nine-speed automatic transmission, it provided smooth acceleration. The Passport's torque-vectoring iVTM4 AWD system and traction-management settings for various terrains added value. The TrailSport trim had wider tracks and off-road-tuned suspension. However, the Passport's fuel economy was less impressive, rated at 12.5 L/100 km in the city and 9.8 on the highway. The Passport's towing capacity was 2,268 kg, surpassing some competitors but falling short of others. Despite some road noise, the Passport offered balanced steering and a comfortable ride.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser offered two rows of seating, with headroom measuring 917 mm in the front and 897 mm in the back. Legroom was 838 mm in the front and 678 mm in the rear. The centre console provided easy access to off-road features, and the cargo area had a raised load floor with a rubber mat. Cargo volume was 1,063 litres, with a 120-volt AC outlet and USB-C ports in higher trims.

The 2024 Honda Passport excelled in cargo space, offering 1,430 litres behind the rear seats and expanding to 2,854 litres with the rear seats folded. The Passport comfortably seated five adults, with ample cupholders and a redesigned centre console for more storage. The front-seat environment was spacious, with a larger cubby below the dashboard.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser featured a 12.3-inch centre touchscreen with the Multi-Terrain Monitor system, standard above the base trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included, along with USB-C ports for front and rear passengers. The upgraded trim offered a 10-speaker sound system, with a 14-speaker JBL option in higher packages.

The 2024 Honda Passport had an 8-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad. The system pushed turn-by-turn directions to the driver's display, which could be annoying in city driving. The TrailSport trim had a seven-speaker audio system, while the Black Edition offered a 10-speaker upgrade.
