2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric car is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfil goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its North American dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for our market came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed simply ID.4, slotting below the ID.4 Pro and ID.4 Pro AWD. We recently spent a day on a test drive with the U.S. equivalent of the ID.4 Pro AWD model, along with a shorter drive in a base ID.4 model.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe Reviews Summary

The Hyundai Santa Fe is fully redesigned for 2024. It marks a significant departure for the brand in terms of styling, with a bold and blocky profile and stance reminiscent of, dare we say it, a certain British brand known for its off-road prowess. The Santa Fe’s redesign has as much substance as style, with a longer wheelbase, standard third-row seats, and new premium amenities, including a “terrace” approach to designing passenger and cargo space.

Verdict: Based on our exploration and time behind the wheel, the 2024 Santa Fe’s redesign is successful, as long as it doesn’t overshadow the rest of Hyundai’s lineup.

Look and feel

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

9/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 featured subtle styling updates, including a gloss black trim on the front bumper and a more squared-off rear bumper design aimed at improving aerodynamics. New wheel designs and colours were introduced, and the rear VW logo was illuminated. Despite these changes, the ID.4 maintained a distinct EV appearance, lacking the traditional SUV profile and ground clearance, which could be a drawback for those attracted to conventional SUV aesthetics. The ID.4 was built on VW’s MEB platform, designed specifically for EVs, offering a modular approach similar to the MQB platform used in other VW models. Inside, the ID.4 carried over the minimalist and quality-focused design from VW’s gasoline cars, with standard leatherette upholstery made partly from recycled fibres.

In contrast, the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe presented a bold departure from previous designs, embracing a boxy shape that prioritized storage capacity. This design choice was a significant shift from the sleek, futuristic aesthetics of Hyundai’s Ioniq models. The Santa Fe’s upscale appearance was complemented by a range of sophisticated exterior colours and anodized-finish badging. The interior offered premium styling, with trims like the XRT and Ultimate Calligraphy featuring high-quality materials and thoughtful design elements. Despite some hard materials in less visible areas, the overall feel was luxurious, with features like a fabric-covered headliner adding a touch of decadence.

Performance

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

7/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 offered two battery options: a new 62-kWh pack for the base model with RWD and an 82-kWh pack for the Pro model, available with RWD or AWD. The single-motor RWD models delivered 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, while the dual-motor AWD version increased output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery reduced curb weight by 109 kilograms, enhancing acceleration and handling. However, the ID.4’s handling was not as sharp as its acceleration, with noticeable body roll on twisty roads. Regenerative braking was present but did not support one-pedal driving, offering a more traditional driving experience.

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe in Canada featured a hybrid powertrain as the entry-level option, with a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 231 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Other models came with a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 277 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, coupled with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. AWD was standard across all models. The Santa Fe offered various driving modes, including Normal, Sport, and Snow, with the XRT trim adding off-road capabilities. Fuel economy for the hybrid was rated at 6.8 L/100 km city and 6.9 highway, while the gas engine consumed 12.1 L/100 km city and 8.8 highway. The XRT trim provided additional towing capacity and off-road prowess, making it suitable for adventurous outings.

Form and function

7/10

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

9/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 provided ample interior space, surpassing other affordable EVs in front and rear legroom and headroom. It offered 858 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,818 litres with them folded, making it practical for an EV. While it fell short of gasoline crossovers like the Honda CR-V in interior space, it was a leader among entry-level EVs. The ID.4 also offered towing capabilities, with RWD models towing up to 1,000 kilograms and AWD models up to 1,225 kilograms. Interior updates for 2023 included a conventional lid for the centre console and improved phone storage.

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe featured a longer wheelbase and body, with most of the extra space dedicated to the cargo area, inspired by the concept of “chabak” for car camping. The cargo area offered 413 litres of space, expanding to 1,148 and 2,267 litres with the third and second rows folded, respectively. The interior was spacious, with the first and second rows providing comfort and flexibility. Depending on the trim, seating options included stain-resistant cloth, synthetic leather, real leather, and quilted Nappa leather. Heated front seats were standard, with ventilation available on higher trims. The Santa Fe also included thoughtful storage solutions and a UV sanitization compartment in the glovebox.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 came standard with a 12.0-inch touchscreen, featuring software updates for improved responsiveness. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with the ID.Cockpit digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system offered sharp graphics and intuitive controls, though the haptic touchpads on the dashboard and steering wheel were less user-friendly. The ID.Light system provided ambient lighting and navigation cues, adding a unique touch to the driving experience.

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe boasted a curved panoramic display, integrating digital real estate without being overwhelming. The touchscreen was intuitive, with crisp graphics and easy access to controls. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a 12-speaker Bose stereo and dynamic voice recognition. Higher trims offered additional features like wireless charging and Hyundai’s BlueLink system for vehicle access. The system allowed for keyless entry and remote access, enhancing convenience and security.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with top scores in frontal and side crash tests. The 2022 model earned the IIHS’s “Top Safety Pick+” rating, with high scores in crash tests and front crash prevention. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and VW’s Travel Assist 2.0. New for 2023 were Park Assist Plus, automated lane-change, and a 360-degree camera system.

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe had not yet been crash-tested by the IIHS or NHTSA, but Hyundai vehicles typically performed well in safety evaluations. Higher trims added features like a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot view monitor, and remote automatic parking.
