2023 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

The 2023 BMW X7 receives a significant refresh, with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. A recent test drive left us scratching our heads over the new headlights and pulling out our hair over the new infotainment system. So, in some ways the 2023 X7 represents a step backwards for this large luxury SUV.

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

2023 BMW X7

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 BMW X7 underwent a significant mid-cycle refresh, adopting a bold new front-end design reminiscent of the BMW 7 Series sedan. The LED accent lights were repositioned, and the actual headlights were tucked beneath, creating a polarizing look with its oversized kidney grille. While the front styling sparked debate, the sides and rear remained largely unchanged, maintaining a familiar silhouette. Inside, the X7 featured a refreshed dashboard with a curved glass display housing the digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen. The interior boasted high-quality materials, including supple leather and a new Sensafin synthetic substitute, though glossy trims were best avoided due to glare.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80 exuded luxury with its Prestige trim, offering six exterior colours and stylish 22-inch wheels. The interior was adorned with diamond-stitched Nappa leather, a suede headliner, and metallic accents. Ambient lighting, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and a wide touchscreen display highlighted its premium status. Despite its luxurious appearance, the Prestige Signature trim available in the U.S. didn't offer significant advantages over the regular Prestige trim, which was recommended for Canadian buyers.

Performance

2023 BMW X7

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 BMW X7 offered a base xDrive40i model with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, producing 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain, paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, allowed the X7 to reach 100 km/h in about 6 seconds. The M60i model featured a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, achieving 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Despite its weight of nearly 2,720 kilograms, the X7 handled well, with limited body roll and a firm yet comfortable ride.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered two engine options: a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 with 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. The V6 provided robust performance but was less fuel-efficient, with observed consumption of 13.7 L/100 km. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV80 excelled in driving dynamics, offering a sporty feel with its adaptive damping suspension and upgraded brakes, though the steering was unremarkable.

Form and function

2023 BMW X7

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

5/10

The 2023 BMW X7 provided ample space, with a power-operated middle row for easier third-row access. The third row accommodated average-sized adults, though thigh support was limited. Cargo space was generous, with 362 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,560 litres with all rear seats folded. The split tailgate and air suspension made loading easier, while front-seat storage was plentiful.

In the 2024 Genesis GV80, only the 3.5T Prestige offered a third-row seat. The interior featured heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate. However, seat comfort was lacking, with the driver’s cushion becoming uncomfortable on long trips. Cargo space was commendable, with 988 litres behind the second row, expanding to 2,378 litres with seats folded.

The 2023 BMW X7 featured the latest iDrive 8 infotainment system, though it was less intuitive than previous versions. Many functions required navigating the touchscreen, with voice commands as an alternative. Standard features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a Harman Kardon sound system and optional head-up display.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, controlled via a centre console dial. The system included navigation, SiriusXM, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Prestige trim featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a Lexicon sound system. A digital key system and head-up display were also included.

The 2023 BMW X7 came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive headlights. Optional features included a surround-view camera and highway driving assist, which performed well during testing.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 boasted advanced safety features like a Blind-Spot View Monitor and Remote Smart Parking Assist. Highway Driving Assist worked well in light traffic, and the GV80 received top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA.
