2022 Porsche Macan vs 2023 Jeep Wrangler

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original design from its 2015 debut, despite undergoing several updates over the years. This model received a fresh styling update, larger standard wheels, and a revamped interior with haptic touch controls, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. The Macan lineup in Canada included four models: the base Macan, Macan T, Macan S, and Macan GTS, with the Macan Turbo's high-output powertrain now featured in the GTS. Our test vehicle, a Macan S, showcased a sleek Volcano Gray exterior with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, embodying Porsche's tradition of graceful aging and athletic design. Inside, the Macan's cabin exuded an upscale, sporty vibe with red leather, gloss black trim, and silver accents, drawing inspiration from other Porsche models.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler, with its fourth-generation JL design, maintained a rugged, no-nonsense aesthetic, characterized by its boxy shape and iconic features like the seven-slot grille and round headlights. Available in two-door and four-door Unlimited versions, the Wrangler offered versatility with removable doors and a foldable windshield for open-air adventures. The limited-edition "Reign" purple paint added a unique flair to our test model. Inside, the Wrangler prioritized practicality with easy-to-clean materials and straightforward controls, though it lacked some luxury features. The body-coloured dash and chunky controls emphasized its utilitarian nature, while the optional Sky One-Touch power soft top provided a convenient way to enjoy the outdoors.

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powertrains, starting with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine in the base Macan and Macan T, delivering 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Macan GTS featured a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, producing 434 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Our Macan S test vehicle was equipped with a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6, generating 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. All Macans came with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and a fully variable AWD system. The Macan S excelled in handling, thanks to its re-tuned steering and suspension, larger wheels, and optional performance features like Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus and Porsche Surface Coated Brakes. Despite its sporty nature, the Macan S maintained a comfortable ride, with a fuel consumption rating of 13.0 L/100 km.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler offered a variety of engine options, catering to different off-road needs. The standard Pentastar V6 engine delivered 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine provided 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. For torque enthusiasts, the 3.0-litre Ecodiesel V6 offered 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 featured a 6.4-litre V8 engine with 470 hp and torque, capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid combined two electric motors with a 17.3-kWh battery pack, offering 35 km of all-electric range. Our test model, the Wrangler 392, excelled in off-road performance with its full-time 4WD system, Off-Road Plus button, and Xtreme Recon package, enhancing its crawl ratio to 58:1. However, the 392's on-road performance was hindered by inadequate brakes and vague steering, issues less pronounced in other Wrangler trims.

The 2022 Porsche Macan provided a comfortable experience for the driver and front-seat passenger, with optional 14-way power-adjustable seats offering heating and ventilation. However, the rear seats were cramped, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned centre console featured haptic touch controls, though it required looking away from the road to operate. Cargo space measured 488 litres behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,503 litres with the seats folded. Despite limited storage space, the Macan accommodated four full-size suitcases with the cargo cover removed.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, with heated options available in higher trims or through a cold-weather package. The rear seat could fit three passengers in four-door models, but space was tight, and rear door access was challenging. Storage for small items was limited, with a flat dash and small glove box and centre console. Cargo space measured 2,050 litres with the rear seats folded, slightly less than the Bronco. The Wrangler offered various top options, including a removable hard top, Sunrider soft top, and the Sky One-Touch power soft top, providing flexibility for open-air driving. The Wrangler excelled in providing charging points, with multiple USB ports and a 115-volt outlet.

The 2022 Porsche Macan featured a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, known as Porsche Communication Management (PCM). It included wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, and connected services. The standard 10-speaker sound system could be upgraded to a Bose or Burmester audio system. The user experience was intuitive, though voice recognition was less reliable compared to competitors. The Macan lacked Android Auto, but stereo volume and climate controls were separate from the touchscreen, reducing the need for frequent interaction with the system.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came with a standard 7-inch touchscreen running the Uconnect infotainment system, with an optional 8.4-inch screen in our test model. Uconnect offered Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity, along with off-road pages displaying vital information. The system initially appeared complex but proved intuitive with use. The Wrangler included a forward-facing camera for off-road trails and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories, but lacked advanced tech features like a digital key or over-the-air updates for vehicle performance.

The 2022 Porsche Macan included standard lane-departure warning and a reversing camera, with optional features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Our test vehicle had most of these features, except lane-keeping assist. The Macan offered advanced parking assistance with a surround-view camera and Park Assist system. However, it lacked more sophisticated driving assistance technologies found in other Porsche models. The Macan had not been rated by NHTSA or IIHS.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's standard safety features included a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control. Advanced features like blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control were standard only on top trims or available as options. The Wrangler received mixed ratings from IIHS, with some trims' headlights rated Poor. NHTSA awarded the Wrangler four stars for frontal crash tests and three stars for rollover, with no side crash rating available.
