2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB Reviews Summary

Designed for Europe’s narrow city streets and tight parking spaces, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB aims to maximize utility in an SUV that is minimally sized. The result is a boxy vehicle emphasizing practicality over style, offering seating for up to seven people and a base price under $50,000 combined with the performance, technology, and luxury upgrades you expect in a Mercedes.

2023 Acura MDX Reviews Summary

Guided by a new "Precision Crafted Performance" ethos, Acura has come a long way in the past six years. Though Honda’s luxury division canceled its NSX sports car and eliminated the sport-hybrid powertrain from its vehicles, Acura’s four remaining cars and SUVs boast appealing designs, satisfying driving character, and modern technologies. The 2023 Acura MDX is the midsize three-row crossover SUV of the lineup, last redesigned just one year ago.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

5/10

2023 Acura MDX

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB was positioned between the GLA and GLC in the automaker's SUV lineup, available in GLB250 and AMG GLB35 specifications. In Canada, the GLB250 featured standard 4Matic all-wheel drive, while the AMG GLB35 boasted a more powerful drivetrain and sophisticated AWD system. The GLB's design was functional, with a steep windshield angle, nearly vertical rear window, and short overhangs. The AMG GLB35, with its 21-inch multi-spoke wheels, added some style and presence. Inside, the GLB's cabin was a visual treat, featuring high-definition displays and ambient lighting. However, the controls required acclimation, and the road noise was notably loud, especially with the optional 21-inch wheels.

The 2023 Acura MDX, available in standard and Type S versions, offered a range of trim packages. The Type S featured subtle styling enhancements, including chicane-design LED lights and quad exhaust outlets. A panoramic moonroof and Iconic Drive ambient lighting were standard, while the Type S Ultra added quilted leather and aluminum interior trim. Despite its appealing design, the MDX's body tapering could give the impression of a dent, and the gloss black dashboard elements complicated control usage. The electronic transmission switchgear was also a point of confusion. Overall, the MDX Type S was attractive but had some design and usability quirks.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

2023 Acura MDX

4/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB offered two versions with a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-4-cylinder engine. The AMG GLB35 was enhanced to produce 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, outperforming the GLB250's engine. It featured an AMG SpeedShift eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, AMG Performance variable 4Matic AWD, and an AMG Sport Exhaust system. The AMG GLB35 accelerated to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, with a fuel consumption rating of 11.2 L/100 km in combined driving. The AMG High-Performance Braking System and AMG Ride Control adaptive damping sport suspension were standard. While the AMG GLB35 emphasized performance, it was firm and loud, making it less suitable for daily driving. However, it excelled on twisty roads, offering a thrilling driving experience.

The 2023 Acura MDX Type S featured a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine, generating 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. It used a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. The MDX Type S had an Integrated Dynamics System with various driving modes and an exclusive Lift mode. Despite performance enhancements, the MDX Type S struggled to deliver a cohesive driving experience. The transmission was indecisive, and the ride lacked compliance. The engine's power increase was modest, and fuel economy was poor, averaging 13.9 L/100 km. The MDX Type S was mostly agreeable in Normal mode but had issues with brake pedal response and tire squeal. Overall, it lacked the cohesion expected from a performance model.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

2023 Acura MDX

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB offered a spacious interior for a small SUV, with an optional third-row seat for children. Standard features included dual-zone automatic climate control and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat. The GLB's cabin was comfortable, with easy access and decent storage. The rear doors opened wide, providing comfortable seating for two adults. The optional third-row seat reduced cargo space, making it less practical for North American buyers. The GLB had a 560-litre cargo area, expandable to 1,755 litres with the second-row seat folded.

The 2023 Acura MDX provided three rows of seats and a spacious cargo area. The Type S Ultra featured 16-way power-adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The MDX's cabin was comfortable, but the Type S seats didn't hold occupants as expected. The second-row seat was adjustable, but the third row was best for children. The MDX's interior design prioritized style over storage space, with limited storage options. The cargo area offered 461 litres of space behind the third row, expandable to 2,021 litres with both rear rows folded.

Technology

2023 Acura MDX

5/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB featured the MBUX infotainment system with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and touchscreen. While Bluetooth was standard, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were optional in Canada. The system was user-friendly, with natural voice recognition and a digital assistant. Additional upgrades included Wi-Fi service and a head-up display. The MBUX system was intuitive, with multiple interaction methods, but some features required optional packages.

The 2023 Acura MDX had a Digital Precision Cockpit with a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and infotainment display. The infotainment system used a True Touchpad Interface, which was less intuitive than a touchscreen. The MDX offered Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa Built-In. The infotainment system included SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, and AcuraLink connected services. The top-tier ELS Studio 3D audio system provided excellent sound quality. The MDX also featured a head-up display with navigation instructions and driving assistance status.

Safety

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

9/10

2023 Acura MDX

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB lacked the optional Driver Assistance Package, which included advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance. Standard safety features included Active Brake Assist and blind-spot monitoring. The GLB's crash-test ratings were unavailable.

The 2023 Acura MDX offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including collision mitigation braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Standard features included rain-sensing wipers, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The MDX received good crash-test ratings, earning a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA.
