2022 Kia EV6 Reviews Summary

We didn't expect them to go there. But the designers and engineers behind the 2022 Kia EV6 did—and deleted the template of their company's affordable, cost-conscious brand. This is an electric performance car that can genuinely compete with a Tesla Model 3 on everything from tech to style to acceleration to charging time. It's a masterclass of fresh thinking in a market segment dominated by rehashed ideas. And yet, it's hampered by the same major problems that, for decades, remain unresolved. The EV6 would be amazing with battery technology that hasn't yet been invented. For now, we'll tell you what the present life is like with this most unusual and exciting Kia in years.

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer Reviews Summary

Few automotive nameplates have kept pace with changing market trends like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has taken on three very different forms over a relatively short time span.

The Trailblazer name first appeared in 1999 on an appearance package for the S-10 Blazer, a compact SUV derived from the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Chevy then applied the Trailblazer nameplate to a midsize SUV sold during model years 2002 through 2009. While not based on a pickup truck, this Trailblazer had the hallmarks of an old-school SUV, including body-on-frame construction and available V8 power.

Today’s Chevy Trailblazer has nothing in common with those predecessors except a name. Introduced for the 2021 model year, this Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover with car-like unibody construction shared with the Buick Encore GX, and tiny, efficiency-focused engines. With the Chevy Trax on hiatus until the 2024 model year, the Trailblazer is Chevy’s entry-level SUV for 2023, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.

The only changes for 2023 are some new extra-cost paint colours, including Nitro Yellow Metallic, Fountain Blue, and Sterling Gray Metallic, along with an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat roof. Trim levels start with the base LS, and continue with the LT, Activ, and RS. We tested a Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ for this review.

Look and feel

2022 Kia EV6

10/10

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

The 2022 Kia EV6 presented a strikingly sporty and sleek design, reminiscent of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It appeared lower and wider, with a highback tail featuring a lip spoiler that doubled as a lightbar. The wheels were pushed to the farthest corners, giving the body a curvaceous, hip-like appearance similar to the Porsche 911. The headlights squinted in a V-shaped pattern, and the black trim below mimicked sealed air intakes. The EV6's profile was sharp and angular, with a smooth lower body, especially in matte silver paint. The interior boasted dual 12-inch screens, a floating centre console, and seats covered in faux suede and leather, creating a futuristic yet car-centric aesthetic.

In contrast, the 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer resembled a mini version of the Chevrolet Blazer, exuding SUV toughness without exaggeration. It featured intricate headlight and taillight elements and dark chrome trim for an upscale appearance. The Activ model aimed for ruggedness with a unique front fascia, faux skid plate, roof rails, and chunky tires, while the RS model sported blacked-out trim, a mesh grille, and dual exhaust outlets. The Trailblazer offered contrasting roof colours, adding a distinctive and retro touch. Inside, the Activ model had a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, and a mix of copper-toned and sparkly black plastic trim, providing a unique yet comfortable cabin experience.

Performance

2022 Kia EV6

7/10

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

The 2022 Kia EV6, particularly in the GT-Line e-AWD variant, delivered impressive performance with its dual electric motors producing 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque. It accelerated to 60 mph in a claimed 4.6 seconds, thanks to its 77.4 kWh battery and low-mounted chassis. The upcoming GT trim promised even more power with 576 hp and a sub-3.5-second 0-60 time. The EV6's torque delivery was seamless, and its regenerative braking offered extensive control with multiple settings. However, cold weather affected its driving range, with the EV6 achieving only 65% of its estimated range in winter conditions. Charging was efficient, with the ability to accept up to 240 kW, though real-world charging speeds varied.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer shared its platform with the Buick Encore GX and offered two engine options: a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and an optional 1.3-litre turbo-three with 155 hp and 174 lb-ft. The Trailblazer Activ test car featured AWD, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and the 1.3-litre engine, providing a decent amount of power and a pleasing exhaust note. The Trailblazer's ride quality was generally good, with dampers tuned for gravel roads, though some body roll and bouncing were noticeable. The selectable AWD system required manual engagement, unlike competitors' automatic systems, and the drive modes offered limited noticeable differences.

Form and function

2022 Kia EV6

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

The 2022 Kia EV6 reimagined core functions with innovative features like pop-out door handles, paddle shifters, and a twisting rotary shifter. The climate controls and stereo shortcuts were combined in a thin touchscreen, which could be frustrating while driving. The EV6 offered generous legroom and headroom, with reclining rear seats and optional heated cushions. However, its cargo space was limited, with 690 litres behind the seats and 1,322 litres when folded. Towing capacity was rated at 1,043 kilograms, and the onboard power generator added versatility.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite being one of the smallest SUVs, offered decent utility with generous headroom and mid-pack legroom. It provided 716 litres of cargo space with the second-row seats in place and 1,540 litres when folded. The Trailblazer's interior featured smart storage solutions, including a covered storage bin, deep tray, and cupholders. However, its towing capacity was limited to 454 kilograms, and the rear seats' flat cushions made long trips less comfortable.

Technology

2022 Kia EV6

9/10

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

8/10

The 2022 Kia EV6's infotainment system was user-friendly, with quick settings adjustments and connectivity options, though wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto required a wired connection. The instrument panel displayed live feeds of blind spots, and the 360-degree cameras offered sharp visuals. The head-up display used augmented reality for navigation, and the highest trim featured a 14-speaker Meridian stereo and remote parking assist.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer's standard infotainment system included a 7-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. An 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a Bose audio system were optional. The Trailblazer's tech was adequate for most buyers, with logical menus and easy-to-read graphics, though it lacked a fully digital instrument cluster.

Safety

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

The 2022 Kia EV6 lacked published safety test results but offered impressive standard safety features, including forward collision avoidance assist, lane keep assist, and driver attention warning. Higher trims added blind spot monitoring and 360 cameras.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer boasted standard safety features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist. It received a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with high marks for crash prevention tech.
