The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was more than just a pretty face, though its appealing styling certainly added to its charm. Chevrolet nailed the proportions, character lines, and small details, with the option of a black, white, or red-painted roof enhancing its allure. In Canada, the Trailblazer was available in four trims: LS, LT, Activ, and RS, with prices ranging from $25,998 to $30,298. The RS trim, which we tested, had a base price of $30,298, but options increased the sticker price to $37,653, including the destination charge. Despite its stylish interior, the cabin was filled with hard plastic, which detracted from its overall appeal.

The 2023 Lexus GX, with its massive spindle grille and 206 mm of ground clearance, had a commanding presence. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned for 2023, limited to 3,000 units and available in three paint colours, including the new Eminent White Pearl. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's interior was marred by an abundance of plastic, a result of Lexus's need to maintain cost-effective manufacturing for this low-selling model. However, it still offered luxury touches like heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery. The GX's design leaned sleeker compared to Toyota's blocky designs, making it easier to handle in technical driving situations.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was powered by a turbocharged 1.3-litre three-cylinder engine, producing 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. This engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in front-wheel drive (FWD) models, made the Trailblazer feel lively. All-wheel drive (AWD) models featured a more satisfying nine-speed automatic transmission and a sophisticated rear suspension for improved handling. The RS trim rode on 18-inch aluminum wheels with 22/55 all-season tires, contributing to its nimble and fun driving experience. However, the Trailblazer was loud on highways, and its suspension struggled with speed bumps. Fuel consumption averaged 9.0 L/100 km, slightly above the official rating.

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its 4.6-litre V8 engine, delivering 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 provided a satisfying driving experience with its linear power delivery. The GX had a towing capacity of 2,948 kg but lagged behind other SUVs in terms of fuel economy, with ratings of 16.2 L/100 km in the city and 14.5 combined. Despite its weight, the GX's handling was predictable, and its brakes were strong and reliable. The Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential and 4WD system enhanced its off-road capabilities.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer, though small, was highly functional. It offered ample room for four passengers, with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat for optimal comfort. The rear seat, while roomy, was less comfortable due to its flat design. The Trailblazer's cargo space was impressive, with 716 litres available in the trunk and 1,540 litres with the rear seats folded. The front passenger seat also folded flat, accommodating items up to 2.5 metres long.

The 2023 Lexus GX provided ample storage space with a deep centre console bin and convenient cupholders. The interior featured hard buttons for controls, which some users preferred over touchscreens. The second row was comfortable, with captain's chairs and good legroom, but the third row was too tight for regular use. The GX's cargo space was limited, with only 328 litres behind the rear seats and 1,832 litres with both rear rows folded. The side-hinged trunk door required effort to open and limited access.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer featured a comprehensive infotainment system with a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. While the infotainment was lacking, the GX excelled in off-road technology, with a 4WD system, downhill assist, and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) for improved handling.
