2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer Reviews Summary

Few automotive nameplates have kept pace with changing market trends like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has taken on three very different forms over a relatively short time span.

The Trailblazer name first appeared in 1999 on an appearance package for the S-10 Blazer, a compact SUV derived from the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Chevy then applied the Trailblazer nameplate to a midsize SUV sold during model years 2002 through 2009. While not based on a pickup truck, this Trailblazer had the hallmarks of an old-school SUV, including body-on-frame construction and available V8 power.

Today’s Chevy Trailblazer has nothing in common with those predecessors except a name. Introduced for the 2021 model year, this Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover with car-like unibody construction shared with the Buick Encore GX, and tiny, efficiency-focused engines. With the Chevy Trax on hiatus until the 2024 model year, the Trailblazer is Chevy’s entry-level SUV for 2023, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.

The only changes for 2023 are some new extra-cost paint colours, including Nitro Yellow Metallic, Fountain Blue, and Sterling Gray Metallic, along with an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat roof. Trim levels start with the base LS, and continue with the LT, Activ, and RS. We tested a Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ for this review.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

8/10

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 was a fresh take on electrified mobility, distinct from its predecessor, the original Ioniq. It showcased a unique design language known as Parametric Pixel, which was both fascinating and slightly overwhelming. The exterior was a blend of minimalistic lines and intricate pixelated lighting elements, giving it a concept car vibe. Inside, the Ioniq 5 offered a serene "Living Space" with sustainable materials and a focus on comfort, including a "Relaxation" mode for the driver's seat. The interior was understated yet inviting, with a modern twist on retro design elements.

In contrast, the 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer was a compact SUV that mirrored the rugged appeal of its larger sibling, the Blazer. It balanced SUV toughness with upscale details like intricate lighting elements and dark chrome trim. The Activ and RS models added unique styling cues, with the former embracing a rugged look and the latter a sportier aesthetic. Inside, the Trailblazer offered a mix of materials and colours, providing a touch of personality to its otherwise practical cabin. While it didn't scream adventure, it had distinctive design touches that set it apart.

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offered a range of powertrains, starting with a 125-kW rear-mounted motor producing 168 horsepower and a range of 354 kilometres. The Preferred long-range variant increased power to 225 hp and extended the range to 488 km. The AWD option featured a dual-motor setup with a total output of 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque, though the range dropped to 414 km. The Ioniq 5 was equipped with four drive modes, including Sport, which added excitement but reduced range. It also featured paddle shifters for adjusting regenerative braking, enhancing the driving experience.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer shared its platform with the Buick Encore GX and offered two turbocharged three-cylinder engines. The standard 1.2-litre engine produced 137 hp, while the optional 1.3-litre engine delivered 155 hp. The Trailblazer's AWD models came with a nine-speed automatic transmission, providing a decent driving experience with a pleasing exhaust note. The Activ model's dampers were tuned for gravel roads but performed well on pavement. The Trailblazer had selectable AWD and three drive modes, though Sport mode offered minimal noticeable changes.

Form and function

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 was built on the Electric Global Modular Platform, maximizing interior space with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. It offered a total interior volume of 3,786 litres, surpassing competitors like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4. The Ioniq 5 prioritized passenger comfort with features like a moveable centre console and flat floor, providing ample space and flexibility. The leatherette seats were comfortable and supportive, catering to various driver sizes.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, though one of the smallest SUVs, offered decent utility with generous headroom and mid-pack legroom. It provided 716 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,540 litres with them folded. While it couldn't match the towing capacity of traditional SUVs, it offered practical storage solutions for smaller items. The Trailblazer's interior was comfortable for everyday use, though long trips in the back row might be less appealing due to flat seat cushions.
