2021 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

Always the bridesmaid but never the bride, the Ram 1500 enters the fray of high-performance off-road vehicles with cocksure confidence. Second place in truck sales last year, Ram earns the first-place podium in superpowers with its new SRT Hellcat-powered TRX trim level as it looks to make moves to climb the sales charts. Or, maybe, just literally drive over its competition.

2022 Ford Maverick Reviews Summary

Ford pickup trucks are Canada’s best-sellers, but that doesn’t mean the Blue Oval is satisfied. The 2022 Ford Maverick aims to further expand the market by offering a more approachable version of the pickup. The Maverick is the smallest Ford truck in over a decade, uses car-like unibody construction for greater refinement, and emphasizes fuel efficiency with a standard hybrid powertrain.

The all-new Maverick’s closest rivals are the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz and the Honda Ridgeline, other unibody pickups of similar size. But while the new Santa Cruz was conceived more as an SUV with a bed, the Maverick is more like a conventional pickup, just smaller than Ford’s other offerings.

The Maverick slots just below the Ford Ranger in size, although it’s still a bit larger than the compact pickups of old. With the demise of the EcoSport crossover, the Maverick is also now Ford’s de facto entry-level vehicle, which seems fitting for a company whose bestselling product is the F-150. Ford isn’t really a car company; it’s a truck company.

While the Ford F-150 is available in a dizzying array of configurations, the automaker kept things simple with the 2022 Maverick. The new Ford pickup is available in just three trim levels—XL, XLT, and Lariat—with a single bed length and cab configuration. At Ford’s invitation, we sampled the full lineup over two days.

2021 RAM 1500

7/10

2022 Ford Maverick

9/10

The 2021 RAM 1500 maintained its robust design from the 2019 overhaul, offering no new cosmetic changes. It continued to provide a mix of quad cab and crew cab models, with bed options of five-foot, seven-inch or six-foot, four-inch. Both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations were available. The standout for 2021 was the introduction of the TRX model, a formidable presence inspired by off-road rally races. The TRX, with its functional hood scoop, massive grille, and fender vents, was purpose-built for rugged terrains. It featured a crew cab-only 4x4 setup with a smaller 5-foot, 7-inch box, and its dimensions pushed it into commercial vehicle territory, necessitating identifier lamps. The TRX's interior matched its rugged exterior with first-class comfort and technology, offering premium materials and a 12-inch Uconnect infotainment display.

The 2022 Ford Maverick presented a more conventional pickup look, drawing inspiration from larger Ford trucks like the F-150 and Ranger. However, its front end deviated with large headlights and a grille crossbar. Smaller than the Ford Ranger, the Maverick was built on a unibody platform shared with the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport. It offered a range of wheel options and a First Edition package with unique graphics and features. The Maverick's interior was designed with affordability in mind, using multicoloured plastics and exposed fasteners for character. Despite its entry-level status, the Maverick's interior was stylish, with ample storage and innovative features like the Ford Integrated Tether System (FITS) for customizable accessories.

It featured an eight-speed automatic transmission and boasted a payload capacity of 594 kg and a towing capability of 3,674 kg. The TRX could accelerate to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and had a top speed of 190 km/h. Despite its fuel consumption of 22.4 litres per 100 km in the city, the TRX excelled in various driving scenarios, offering eight on- and off-road drive modes. Its off-road capabilities were tested at the Wild West Motorsports Park, where it handled challenging terrains with ease, thanks to features like Selec-Speed Control and launch control.

The 2022 Ford Maverick came standard with a hybrid powertrain, featuring a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine and a single electric motor, producing 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. An optional 2.0L EcoBoost engine offered 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid was front-wheel drive, while the EcoBoost offered all-wheel drive. The Maverick's FX4 off-road package added suspension tuning and drive modes for enhanced off-road capability. On pavement, the Maverick's unibody platform provided a smooth ride, and its compact size made it easy to park. The hybrid powertrain was praised for its smoothness, while the EcoBoost offered more towing capability and spirited acceleration.

The front seats were comfortable, and the powered-adjustable pedals were a notable feature. The TRX's seating position offered the most adjustability compared to rivals, enhancing driver comfort on long drives.

The 2022 Ford Maverick, available only in a four-door crew-cab configuration, offered more legroom than the Toyota Tacoma and Hyundai Santa Cruz. It excelled in interior storage, with numerous cubbies and the innovative FITS system for customizable accessories.
