2021 Mazda CX-30 Reviews Summary

Blurring the lines between mainstream and luxury brands, the new 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo pairs effortless acceleration and engaging driving dynamics with a premium design and impressive technologies. Despite its substantial boost in power, this subcompact SUV isn’t about hardcore performance. Rather, it’s about delivering equal parts confidence, capability, style, and satisfaction, and at a price that stops where the traditional luxury brands are just getting started.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

Look and feel

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo was a striking vehicle, especially for those with a penchant for black accents. It featured exclusive shiny black 18-inch wheels, a black grille, and black side mirror housings, all complemented by thick matte black body cladding. This design choice gave the CX-30 Turbo a unique appearance, as if it was floating over its wheels, creating a distinct visual separation from the Mazda3 hatchback on which it was based. The elevated stance of the CX-30 was immediately noticeable upon entering the vehicle, offering a higher seating position that was both practical and stylish.

Inside, the CX-30's cabin mirrored the Mazda3's, with high-quality materials and a sophisticated design. The interior boasted stitched chocolate brown surfaces, chrome accents, and a frameless rearview mirror, contributing to an upscale vibe. Standard features included black or white leather upholstery with the GT trim, where the turbocharged engine became available. The pricing for the 2021 CX-30 ranged from an MSRP of $24,700 to $36,400, with our test vehicle priced at $38,827, including fees.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5, while maintaining a familiar silhouette, introduced subtle yet impactful changes. New LED headlights and taillights provided distinctive illumination, and the revised bumpers, grille, and rear liftgate added a fresh touch. The top-tier Signature trim featured body-colour lower exterior trim, emphasizing Mazda's premium aspirations. Inside, the CX-5 retained its luxurious feel with Nappa leather upholstery, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents. The new seats offered improved comfort, and the driving position was sportier, enhancing the overall driving experience.

The CX-5's pricing ranged from $30,500 to $43,650, with the turbocharged engine available as an option or standard on higher trims. Our test vehicle, equipped with the turbo engine and additional features, was priced at $46,175. The 2022 CX-5's enhancements in ride quality, reduced noise, and improved handling made it a compelling choice for those seeking a blend of luxury and performance.

Performance

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo was equipped with a turbocharged Skyactiv 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering between 227 and 250 horsepower, depending on the fuel's octane rating. With torque figures ranging from 310 to 320 lb-ft, the CX-30 Turbo offered effortless acceleration. Its six-speed automatic transmission, standard i-Activ AWD, and G-Vectoring Control Plus technology contributed to a refined driving experience. Fuel efficiency was rated at 9.3 L/100 km in combined driving, with a real-world average of 9.6 L/100 km.

Mazda engineers focused on delivering a satisfying driving experience, prioritizing power and response over sheer speed. The CX-30 Turbo's AWD system actively distributed power to the rear wheels, enhancing traction and stability. While the added height and weight affected handling compared to the Mazda3, the CX-30's off-road capabilities and ground clearance made it versatile for various terrains. The Off-Road mode further enhanced its performance in challenging conditions.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 offered a choice between a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine with 187 horsepower and a turbocharged version producing up to 256 horsepower. The revised six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD provided responsive performance. Fuel consumption for the turbo engine was rated at 9.8 L/100 km, with a real-world average of 11.1 L/100 km. The new Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) system allowed drivers to choose between Normal, Sport, and Off-Road modes.

The 2022 CX-5's improved structural rigidity and suspension tuning resulted in a quieter, smoother ride with reduced body roll and enhanced handling. The driving dynamics were significantly improved, offering a blend of compliance and composure that instilled confidence. The CX-5's driving experience was more aligned with Mazda's sporty reputation, making it a legitimate alternative to entry-level luxury SUVs.

Form and function

2022 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo offered a comfortable and driver-focused interior. The eight-way manual adjustment for the driver's seat, along with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, provided a pleasant driving experience. However, the lack of ventilated seats and limited front passenger seat adjustments were notable drawbacks. The cabin's design, with its organic shapes and high-quality materials, created a sense of spaciousness, though rear-seat accommodations were cramped.

Cargo space in the CX-30 Turbo was competitive, with 572 litres behind the rear seats and 1,280 litres with the seats folded. However, the location of the optional wireless smartphone charger in the centre console storage bin limited its usability.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 addressed previous complaints with new, more comfortable seats and a sportier driving position. The height-adjustable front passenger seat, dual-zone climate control, and heated and ventilated front seats added to the comfort. The back seat remained snug, but heated outboard cushions and air conditioning vents improved passenger comfort.

The CX-5's control layout, while initially frustrating, became intuitive with time. Storage space was adequate, with wireless smartphone charging available. Cargo capacity was generous, with 871 litres behind the rear seats and 1,680 litres with the seats folded, comparing favourably to entry-level luxury SUVs.

While the system required acclimation, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provided familiar interfaces. The GT trim added SiriusXM, navigation, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system, enhancing the audio experience. The Active Driving Display projected useful data onto the windshield, improving safety and convenience.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 retained its 10.25-inch Mazda Connect infotainment system, operated through centre console and steering wheel controls. While lacking a touchscreen and natural voice recognition, the system was functional with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GT and higher trims featured a 10-speaker Bose audio system, offering a satisfactory listening experience. Mazda Connected Services provided additional connectivity features, enhancing the overall tech package.
