2021 Mazda CX-30 Reviews Summary

Blurring the lines between mainstream and luxury brands, the new 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo pairs effortless acceleration and engaging driving dynamics with a premium design and impressive technologies. Despite its substantial boost in power, this subcompact SUV isn’t about hardcore performance. Rather, it’s about delivering equal parts confidence, capability, style, and satisfaction, and at a price that stops where the traditional luxury brands are just getting started.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, it's superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

Look and feel

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo was a striking vehicle, especially for those who appreciated a sleek, black aesthetic. Its shiny black 18-inch wheels, grille, and side mirror housings, combined with matte black body cladding, gave it a distinctive look. Mazda's design philosophy aimed to create a light and agile appearance, making the CX-30 seem as if it was floating over its wheels. This design choice set it apart from the Mazda3 hatchback, on which it was based, by giving it a higher stance both visually and physically. Inside, the CX-30 offered a refined cabin with quality materials and a sophisticated design, featuring stitched chocolate brown surfaces and chrome accents, providing an upscale vibe.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler was all about ruggedness and practicality. Buyers had to choose between the classic two-door or the more spacious four-door body style, with a variety of engine options, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, gasoline V6, turbodiesel V6, gas V8, or the 4xe plug-in hybrid. The Wrangler's design was unmistakably Jeep, with its iconic boxy shape and removable roof and doors. The High Tide model, based on the Sport S trim, added features like LED exterior lighting and a body-colour hardtop with a Sunrider Fliptop. The Wrangler's interior was basic but functional, with durable materials and a focus on off-road capability. Despite its higher price point, the Wrangler's charm lay in its unique driving experience and off-road prowess.

Performance

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo was equipped with a turbocharged Skyactiv 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering between 227 and 250 horsepower depending on the fuel's octane rating. It produced 310 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm or 320 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm, ensuring strong acceleration. The CX-30's six-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ AWD system contributed to its dynamic performance. Fuel efficiency was rated at 9.3 L/100 km in combined driving, though real-world testing showed an average of 9.6 L/100 km. The CX-30's driving experience was characterized by effortless acceleration and a sophisticated feel, though its added height and weight made it less agile than the Mazda3.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, on the other hand, featured a 3.6-litre V6 engine with eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, producing 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system, ideal for challenging weather conditions. The Wrangler's fuel consumption was higher, averaging 14.0 L/100 km over a week of testing. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, with its open-air design and off-road capabilities. However, it was known for its loud cabin, vague steering, and rough ride, which were part of its charm for enthusiasts.

Form and function

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo offered a comfortable and driver-focused interior with eight-way manual adjustment for the driver's seat and standard heated front seats. The cabin's design was minimalist yet spacious, with high-quality materials. However, rear-seat space was limited, and the front passenger seat lacked adjustability. Cargo space was 572 litres with the rear seats up and 1,280 litres with them folded, providing decent storage for a small SUV.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler's interior was rugged and functional, with comfortable seats and durable materials. However, getting in and out was challenging, especially with a raised suspension. Visibility was mixed, with some areas requiring adjustments. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry challenges but enjoyed a good view once inside. Cargo space was generous, with 898 litres behind the rear seats and 2,050 litres with them folded, making it suitable for outdoor adventures.

Technology

2021 Mazda CX-30

2022 Jeep Wrangler

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 featured an 8.8-inch infotainment display controlled via physical controls and voice commands. While it offered Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system's complexity could be frustrating. The GT trim added SiriusXM, navigation, and a Bose audio system, enhancing the overall experience. The Active Driving Display projected useful information onto the windshield, improving safety and convenience.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's infotainment system was more basic, with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and smartphone integration. The optional Uconnect 8.4 system offered additional features like satellite radio and navigation. Despite its simplicity, the Wrangler's tech was functional, with options like remote engine start and heated seats enhancing comfort.

Safety

2021 Mazda CX-30

9/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo excelled in safety, earning a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA, except for a four-star rollover resistance rating. It came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including adaptive front lighting and parking sensors.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler's safety features were optional, with the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group adding valuable systems like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. However, its crash-test ratings were less impressive, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS.
