2021 Kia K5 Reviews Summary

Sedans are now the most exciting new cars in the mainstream market. They are to crossovers today what craft beer was in the early 2000s. They’re not on every corner anymore because North Americans prefer trucks over cars, but sedans like the 2021 Kia K5 are refreshing to see, surprisingly good to drive, and will make you look cultured and smart without having to try. The K5—and its new name—replaces the Optima and upgrades nearly everything in the pursuit of style and performance. It’s one of the best midsize sedans out there.

2021 Toyota Camry Reviews Summary

The Toyota Camry has long been many new-car buyers’ default choice—but not because it’s interesting. Reliability and practicality have traditionally been the Camry’s strengths, not sportiness or style.

Toyota tried to change that for the 2018 model year, when the Camry was last redesigned. The current-generation Camry adopted more extroverted styling, and engineers tried to make the driving experience more exciting, too. While Toyota’s approach has changed, the Camry still competes against the same array of midsize sedans, including the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, and Volkswagen Passat.

Changes for the 2021 model year include subtle styling tweaks, new infotainment displays, an upgrade to the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ (TSS 2.5+) package of driver aids, and some changes to the dashboard trim.

The Camry offers buyers more choices than many rivals, encompassing three powertrains (inline-four, V6, and hybrid), four trim levels (LE, SE, XSE, XLE), three packages available on select models (Upgrade, Nightshade Edition, and TRD) and the choice of front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Our test car was an AWD Camry SE Nightshade Edition, positioned close to the middle of the lineup.

Look and feel

2021 Kia K5

8/10

2021 Toyota Camry

6/10

The 2021 Kia K5 represented a bold new direction for Kia, shedding its past image of drab sedans. With a fresh design, the K5 was a striking departure from its predecessor, the Optima. The fastback form and GT-Line trim, featuring flat Wolf Gray paint and red seats, gave it an Audi A5 Sportback-like appearance. The K5's design was marked by unique taillights, a long rear window, and a honeycomb grille with Z-shaped LED running lights. Despite some fake vents and exhaust tips, the K5's proportions and styling details made it a standout in the sedan market. The interior was equally impressive, with a driver-focused dash, quality materials, and a sporty feel, elevating it above many competitors.

In contrast, the 2021 Toyota Camry aimed to distance itself from its generic past with a more exciting design. While some styling elements like flared wheel arches and thin headlights worked well, others, such as fake vents on SE and XSE trims, added visual clutter. The Camry's interior mirrored its exterior's chaotic styling, with a mix of trim elements and materials that lacked a cohesive design theme. Despite this, the Camry offered comfortable and supportive seats, excellent visibility, and a decent amount of rear headroom and legroom. The cargo space was average for a midsize sedan, and the inclusion of analog controls for key functions improved usability.

Performance

2021 Kia K5

6/10

2021 Toyota Camry

9/10

The 2021 Kia K5's performance didn't quite match its aggressive styling. The GT-Line model lacked paddle shifters and had softer suspension damping, making it less sporty than it appeared. The standard 1.6-litre turbo-four engine produced 180 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, providing adequate power for daily driving. The eight-speed automatic transmission was quick but not always smooth. Fuel efficiency was impressive, with an estimated 9.2 L/100 km in the city and 6.9 on the highway. The GT trim promised better performance with a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine delivering 290 hp, but it was only available with FWD, which could be problematic for handling.

The 2021 Toyota Camry offered a range of powertrains, starting with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The XSE trim added a dual-exhaust system, increasing output slightly. A 3.5-litre V6 engine with 301 hp was available, providing more power for those seeking a sportier drive. The Camry Hybrid combined a 2.5-litre engine with electric assist for a total of 208 hp. The Camry's chassis struck a good balance between handling and ride quality, offering a surprisingly fun driving experience. The TRD package added performance upgrades, enhancing the Camry's sporty appeal.

Form and function

2021 Kia K5

9/10

2021 Toyota Camry

8/10

The 2021 Kia K5 offered comfortable seating for two adults in the back, despite its raked profile. The front seats were supportive and firm, ideal for long drives. The interior featured easy-to-use hard buttons for climate control and stereo functions, and a convenient wireless charging pad. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with an optional 10.25-inch display. Trunk space was 434 litres, providing ample room for cargo.

The 2021 Toyota Camry provided generous rear headroom and legroom, though front space was slightly below average. The front seats were adjustable and comfortable, with excellent outward visibility. Cargo space was 428 litres, typical for a midsize sedan. In-cabin storage was limited, with small cupholders and door bottle holders. The Camry included analog controls for key functions, improving ease of use, though some controls were a long reach from the driver's seat.

Technology

The 2021 Kia K5 featured wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, making it easy to set up. The GT-Line trim added 18-inch black alloys, LED taillights, a panoramic sunroof, and adaptive cruise control. Heated and ventilated seats, a 10.25-inch infotainment system, and Kia's UVO link were also available. The K5's Smart Cruise Control allowed for semi-automated highway driving, enhancing convenience.

The 2021 Toyota Camry came with a standard 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offered a 9-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a JBL audio system. A 10-inch head-up display was available on XSE and XLE trims. The infotainment system was functional but lacked standout features. USB ports and a 12-volt outlet were standard, though additional plug-in options were not available on higher trims.

Safety

The 2021 Kia K5 earned top safety ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS, receiving the Top Safety Pick+ designation. Standard safety features included rear side airbags, a driver's knee airbag, forward collision avoidance assist, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The K5 EX trim and above included Junction Turning, enhancing safety at intersections.

The 2021 Toyota Camry also received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. The TSS 2.5+ package of safety features was standard, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. New for 2021, the Camry included a Rear Seat Reminder and enhanced forward-collision warning capabilities. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available as options.
