Is the 2023 Subaru Outback a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

The 2023 Subaru Outback is positioned as a practical crossover for everyday use, with standard all-wheel drive, strong safety systems, and useful utility. It also brings fresh styling, new infotainment and safety technologies, and the Onyx Edition for a more distinctive look and easier-to-live-with interior.

The trade-offs are clear: the base engine is underwhelming, and the design may be polarising. The voice recognition system is also frustrating, so you’ll likely rely on smartphone integration instead.

With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a strong-value example.

Is the 2023 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 Outback is framed as a dependable, safety-focused crossover with standard all-wheel drive, strong utility, and a cabin built for everyday use. Its boxer engine layout helps lower the centre of gravity for better handling, and the drivetrain is tuned to support confident driving in varied conditions.

On the ownership side, the model’s value proposition is strengthened by its standard equipment and practical capability. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the base powertrain may feel strained if you regularly drive with a full load or on steep routes.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Subaru Outback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim is the most stripped-down version, while Touring adds more convenience and safety equipment, and Onyx Edition brings blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery. Limited adds a more upscale cabin, and the XT family is the better choice if you want stronger acceleration.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 182 horsepower and can feel short on passing and climbing power. The 2.4-litre turbocharged XT engine delivers 260 hp and is the better fit if you drive in the mountains or want more responsive performance.
• Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist are added from Touring grade, and some advanced functions are tied to higher trims.
• Infotainment: The base model uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and SiriusXM. Most trims get the 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start with Touring.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 8.3 L/100 km combined in testing, while the turbocharged XT models are rated at 9.5 L/100 km combined, and the Wilderness is rated at 10.1 L/100 km combined.

Which 2023 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2023 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: Convenience, Touring, Onyx Edition, Limited, Wilderness, Limited XT, and Premier XT.

Here's the short version:

• Convenience: This is the entry point if you want the Outback’s standard all-wheel drive, practical utility, and core safety tech at the lowest price.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, and more safety equipment.
• Onyx Edition: Choose this if you want the blacked-out styling and water-resistant interior that make the 2023 update feel more distinctive.
• Limited: This is the pick if you want the most upscale cabin feel with the standard engine, especially if interior quality matters more than outright speed.
• Wilderness: This is the one to buy if your priorities include tougher outdoor use and the most capable off-road character in the range.
• Limited XT: This is the sweet spot for buyers who want stronger turbocharged performance without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• Premier XT: This is the most premium choice, and it adds the most advanced equipment in the range, including the third wide-angle mono camera.

The Touring grade is the key safety-package step-up, since it adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Subaru Outback?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 458 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.36% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $31,387 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $31,387 CAD sits slightly below last year's $35,813 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it’s time to sell. Demand should remain supported by the model’s practical reputation and broad appeal.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2023 Subaru Outback earns top marks from the IIHS, including in the new, more stringent side-impact crash test.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the standard driver-assistance suite, and in Base trim it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. Touring adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist, while higher trims can add more advanced camera-based support.

One caveat is that the rear automatic braking system can be incompatible with some driveways, so you may want to test that feature in your own parking setup.

Should I buy a 2023 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.36% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds fresh styling, new infotainment and safety technologies, and the Onyx Edition.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $28,546 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $31,387 CAD average.
• It focuses on a more capable, adventure-oriented version of Subaru’s all-wheel-drive formula.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $34,363 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $31,387 CAD average.
• It broadens the trim range with feature-enriched versions and trim-specific aesthetic tweaks.

The bottom line: If you want the refreshed look and updated tech at a softer price than the next model year, the 2023 is the sensible default. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 is the value play; if you want more trim breadth, the 2024 is worth a look.
