CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 422 currently listed for sale and an average price of $31,722 CAD, 31.8% of 2023 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Subaru Outback 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
100.0% of 2023 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Subaru Outback stands out for combining standard all-wheel drive with strong safety systems and ratings, along with the kind of utility that makes it appealing to buyers looking for a practical crossover. It also offers impressive off-road capability for a crossover, which helps separate it from more road-focused rivals. On top of that, it is presented as excellent value for money, making its overall package especially attractive.
For 2023, the Outback receives several updates, including fresh styling, new infotainment and safety technologies. The Canadian line-up also adds the Onyx Edition, which brings blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery. Those improvements build on the momentum of the rugged Outback Wilderness that debuted last year, giving the Outback family a more adventurous image.
There are still a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The base engine is described as underwhelming, the design may be polarising, and the voice recognition system can be frustrating. Even so, the 2023 Subaru Outback remains distinctive because it blends everyday usefulness, all-weather confidence, and a strong safety reputation in a way that continues to resonate with crossover shoppers.

Reviewed a 2023 Subaru Touring XT AWD on Jul 2, 2023
I just purchased a 2023 Outback Touring and I am having the same windshield problems. If I’m in a Lighted area, I can see fine at night but when I start into unlit areas, I can’t see at night. This is a very serious safety issue. The black shield that covers the windshield makes it almost impossible to see what is in front of me. I previously owned a 2017 Subaru Outback and did not have this problem.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,408 CAD |

Prices have softened 12.73% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 422 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Subaru Outback earns 4.33/5 from users and 7.83/10 from experts. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
It stands out for standard all-wheel drive, strong safety systems and ratings, and the kind of utility that suits you if you want a practical crossover with real all-weather confidence. It also brings impressive off-road capability for a crossover, which helps it separate itself from more road-focused rivals.
The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and the potentially polarising design. The frustrating voice recognition system is another drawback if you plan to rely on the infotainment system often.
With 31.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Outback’s safety-focused engineering and standard all-wheel drive support its reputation as a dependable all-weather choice. Its boxer engine layout helps lower the centre of gravity, and the drivetrain is tuned to handle changing conditions with confidence.
The performance notes also point to a durable, familiar mechanical formula rather than a complicated one, which can be reassuring for used buyers. Subaru’s cost-effectiveness pitch also includes the idea that the model delivers strong value for what you get, which can help ownership feel less risky over time.
If you buy one, the biggest long-term ownership risk is that the base powertrain may leave you wanting more, especially if you regularly drive in hilly or highway conditions.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Subaru Outback?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim is the most stripped-back version, while higher trims add a more upscale cabin and more equipment. The Limited trim stands out for its more premium interior presentation, and the Onyx Edition adds black wheels and trim that better suit the more aggressive exterior styling.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is described as underpowered, while the turbocharged XT models deliver much stronger acceleration and better passing power. If you drive at elevation or want more confident highway performance, the turbo is the better fit.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist in the Base model. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist are added from Touring grade, and Automatic Emergency Steering is also part of the system.
- Infotainment: The base model uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Starting with Touring trim, you get the 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus access to connected services; a wireless charging pad is fitted on all trims except Convenience.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 8.3 L/100 km combined, while the turbocharged XT models are rated at 9.5 L/100 km combined. The Wilderness trim is rated at 10.1 L/100 km combined.
Which 2023 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2023 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: Convenience, Touring, Onyx Edition, Limited, Wilderness, Limited XT, and Premier XT.
Here's the short version:
- Convenience: This is the entry point if you want the Outback’s standard all-wheel drive, utility, and safety foundation at the lowest price. It makes sense if you care more about capability and value than extra comfort or tech.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many buyers because it adds the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, and more safety equipment. If you want the most balanced mix of features and price, this is the one to focus on.
- Onyx Edition: Choose this if you want the blacked-out exterior treatment and water-resistant upholstery that give the Outback a more adventurous look and a more practical cabin feel.
- Limited: This is the pick if you want the most upscale-feeling standard-powertrain Outback. The cabin presentation is a highlight, and it suits you if comfort and a more premium interior matter more than outright performance.
- Wilderness: This is the trim to choose if off-road capability is your priority. It gets the turbo engine, higher ground clearance, and a more capable X-Mode system.
- Limited XT: This is the sweet spot if you want the stronger turbocharged engine with a more refined, well-equipped cabin.
- Premier XT: This is the top choice if you want the most advanced version, including the additional wide-angle mono camera mentioned in the safety content.
From a safety-package standpoint, the Base model gets the core EyeSight suite, while Touring and above add blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 422 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.73% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $31,629 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $31,773 CAD sits slightly below last year's $36,408 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future resale may depend more on condition, trim, and equipment than on broad market momentum. If prices stabilise, a well-kept Outback with the right features should remain appealing to shoppers who want standard AWD and strong utility.
The turbocharged trims and better-equipped versions may hold interest better than the base model because they address the biggest criticism of the standard engine. Strong value perception can also help support demand when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2023 Subaru Outback earns top marks across the board from the IIHS, including in the new, more stringent side-impact crash test.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and in the Base model it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist are added from Touring grade, and Automatic Emergency Steering is also included when those features are present.
Subaru also adds new EyeSight cameras and an electronic brake booster for 2023 to refine how the safety systems operate and to support pedestrian, cyclist, and automatic steering functions. One caveat is that the rear automatic braking system can be incompatible with some driveways, which may make it less useful in certain situations.
Should I buy a 2023 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.73% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds fresh styling, new infotainment and safety technologies, and the Onyx Edition for Canada.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $29,510 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $31,773 CAD average.
- It introduces the adventure-focused Wilderness formula with strong outdoor capability.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $35,041 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $31,773 CAD average.
- It broadens the trim range and keeps the raised wagon shape with strong practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, updated tech, and strong safety, the 2023 is the primary pick. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2022 can save you money, while the 2024 makes sense if you want the broader trim spread and don’t mind paying more.
